Not Luck But Grace

Not quite two months ago, I started my MARPE orthodontic journey. I have had some routine follow-ups, and I am turning the device (cranking it each morning with a small wrench). I now have a small gap between my teeth!

My speech is improving, though sometimes, my words still sound garbled. I think I talk so much for work that my mouth just gets tired! It helps to swallow or drink some water. My patients have been kind and understanding when I explain the situation. I just don’t want to hinder their understanding of me!

Eating is still a bit of a challenge, but I am doing well overall. I am able to eat more variety now. I take my time and eat slowly as much as possible. But at work, it is more challenging. As it is, my lunch break is sometimes cut short due to patient care or interruptions. So, the thirty minutes fly by considering all that needs to be done to eat, brush my teeth, and clean food out of my MARPE device!

Mostly, I am eating simple soft foods, like beans and rice for lunch. I can add veggies chopped up in my food processor, too. I will probably branch out and add new things at some point, but these are easiest for now.

My coworker, another Registered Dietitian, said I was the perfect person to go through the MARPE experience because I can figure out how to eat well. 🙂 Notice the small gap in my upper teeth in this St. Patrick’s Day photo at work yesterday!

This week, I started teaching a multi-week class for Veterans. I will be educating them on how to add more anti-inflammatory foods (such as fruits and vegetables). I told them about my MARPE journey to explain why I might be talking a little strangely. Also, I explained how trying new foods can sometimes be awkward, but it is so important to give it all they’ve got. I said, “If I can do this MARPE journey, which is rather awkward, you can add some broccoli and cabbage and figure out how to cook them.”

Good health is not luck. It is God’s gracious blessing and takes discipline to maintain it. We must build good habits and do the difficult work: chop those veggies, manage stress, go to bed on time, and exercise, etc. I am convinced that even then, it is God’s grace that sustains us. We cannot guarantee a long, healthy life. Sometimes people still die prematurely, yet we can trust that God has numbered our days and will fulfill His plan in our lives.

I am grateful for what God is doing in my mouth through the MARPE. Moreover, I am excited to see how He uses me (and my mouth!) to continue to bless and serve others. He is so good!

**********

Heavenly Father, thanks for the work You are doing in my life (and my mouth!). Help me use everything You’ve given me for Your glory. May my mouth bring You praise and glory! In Jesus’ Name, Amen

Question: What’s one step you can take to promote healthful personal habits today? If you don’t make that change, how will that affect your health over time?

Task: Please continue to pray for my mouth and MARPE journey. My teeth are often sore, and I would still very much like to avoid any further surgeries. Thank you!

Finding Grace #523

You may have seen the acronym GRACE as God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. Grace is also God’s unmerited favor, or God doing for us what we cannot.

I find grace overflowing with God’s love, joy, peace, blessings, mercy, power, provision, protection, and wisdom. Thank You, Jesus!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This was a great week!  I started working full-time. To make up my hours, I am going in thirty minutes earlier and staying the whole day on Friday. It was a pretty smooth transition, and I am grateful for the opportunity and God’s grace!

On Monday night, Lydia and I both had dentist appointments. I was a little concerned I would have pain while my teeth were cleaned, but the dental hygienist was very gentle. It was a good experience!

On Tuesday, Lydia had an orchestra concert. The eighth graders were included with the high schoolers, so that was fun. I enjoyed the dance music theme.

Registered Dietitian Day was on Wednesday. We celebrated at work with Olive Garden soup, salad, and breadsticks. I mainly focused on the soup, since it was challenging to chew the salad and breadsticks. We also had fun with a game, trying to guess which fridge picture belonged to which RD!

My cold is about 95% better, and I am extremely happy to be feeling better. Praise God!

Today, Lydia has the day off from Speech tournaments. So, we are doing a few small chores and just spending time together! We might hang out with some friends later.

These are only a few examples, but God’s grace never runs out!

There’s grace in every situation—we just need to look for it. God promises if we seek Him, we will find Him (see Jeremiah 29:13)!

Full-Time Grace

March is National Nutrition Month, and today is Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist Day! I have been a dietitian for almost twenty years! I love what I get to do.

For nearly sixteen years (since moving to Fargo), I have worked part-time. I have overlapped time at a clinic, a nursing home, a hospital, a college, and now the VA. I’ve had stints of working forty hours a week to fill in here and there. But, on Monday, I officially bumped up my work hours to full-time! It’s a win-win for my team and me.

Working part-time hours was a major blessing when Dave died in May 2013. God knew I needed to have space to grieve, but He also let me have time with Lydia. I would take her to drop-in daycare when I worked, and then we could still go to the park or the zoo. Had I been working forty hours a week, my emotions and parenting would have taken a hit.

What a wonderful, gracious God!

I began working twenty hours a week at the VA in August 2019. It was more than I was doing before, and I was grateful for the opportunity. However, all that we do there is very high-level and takes a lot of effort to stay at the top of our game. So, getting all my tasks done was a challenge before I had to leave each day.

When COVID hit the following Spring, I was so glad to have my VA position because it also meant I was guaranteed daycare at the local Y. They never closed, and I never missed one day of work. God was so good to protect us and provide for us! Only He could know what was coming in advance!

Not long after, I was asked to go to thirty-four hours a week. It was still part-time, but I qualified for full-time benefits. At each age and stage of Lydia’s life, God has covered us! I would go in half an hour later than my coworkers and then work four hours on Fridays. I tended to call my mom, get groceries, or prioritize that time when making routine appointments.

I am a good worker, yet when my manager periodically asked me if I wanted to go full-time, I would politely decline. The money wasn’t the issue; I just wanted to make sure Lydia was in a good spot so I could be away a little more often. I didn’t feel like God gave me the green light until recently.

Over the last few months, Lydia has shone and grown in so many ways. She’s older, responsible, and has her own activities. Lydia continues to rise to whatever challenges arise. She will go to High School next fall! And while there will be more adjustments, I know God will see us through.

On Monday, I wasn’t even at work twenty minutes before I covered a walk-in patient on the fly. I didn’t mind, just took it in stride. I am glad for the chance to serve Veterans and want to do it for the Lord.

There are some obvious perks of working full-time, besides the additional money to help pay for my teeth and MARPE services. Someday soon, I will probably need to get another car (or two). One for me and/or one for Lydia! Plus, we will have college visits coming up, probably sooner than later. 😉

One thing is clear: Regardless of how much I work or earn, God has always given me full-time grace. He is not stingy! Grace is precisely NOT based on anything I can do but on what Jesus DID. We receive His everlasting favor and blessings. Thank You, Lord!

Heavenly Father, thanks for all the ways You show Your love for me. Help me be a wise steward with Your resources and help me trust You more. In Jesus Name, Amen

Questions: How can you trust God to provide for you today, this week, this month?

Task: Pray that Lydia and I can have a smooth transition as I start working full-time. Thank you!!

God’s Good Gravy

This week, I heard a new-to-me term: the good gravy of God. I had to laugh because it just happens to be the week of Thanksgiving. Even before I heard an explanation, I understood that gravy isn’t the main thing, it is the “extra.”

Psalm 103 talks about some of God’s benefits, including healing, redemption, love, grace, and compassion. All of these are wonderful, but they are just “gravy” compared to the forgiveness and reconciliation we have through Jesus.

Really think about that for a minute. Romans 8:32 says, “He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all—how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?”

Jesus fills our individual lives with good things, too. Blessings. Gravy. Benefits. Extras. Bonuses. Over the top. This week, I am filled with gratitude for all He has done for me. It is a good time to reflect.

God’s good gravy is pure grace. You and I may enjoy different amounts of gravy slathered over our food (I like a lot!), but God’s grace is always abundant…. superabundant, in fact. There’s no way we can contain it!

Lately, I have been more aware of His daily blessings, such as special moments with Jesus in the morning. He has given me inward peace. I have such a gift in Lydia, as well as a beautiful home and all that goes with that… warmth, plenty of food, protection. The Lord keeps coming through for me at work and helps me get back and forth safely, too. Thank You, Jesus!

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and take some time to consider all of God’s benefits for His beloved children. A good parent, He only wants what is best for us. And, He is more than capable of blessing us.

That said, it’s not about the benefits and blessings… the stuff. It’s about drawing close to the One who loves us most and relishing His grace and goodness. He won’t give us anything that pulls us away from Him.

May we have wisdom to see Jesus at work around us and understand all of God’s good gravy in our lives. He has an everlasting and eternal supply, and He loves going over the top on our behalf!

**********

Father God, You are so good and gracious. Thanks for all Your grace and love. May we seek You more than all You do for us. In Jesus’ Name, Amen

Questions: Are you doing anything exciting for Thanksgiving? When it comes to gravy, do you have a preference on type or quantity?!

Task: Make a list of all your blessings and praise God. Whether on turkey, mashed potatoes, or even biscuits, next time you have gravy, pause and give God thanks!

Pasta and Feeling Perturbed

Yesterday, I woke up with a sore neck and spent most of the day trying to stretch or rub the affected area. Periodically, at work, I noticed I was slouching a bit and clenching my jaw, which didn’t help the pain. I tried to correct my posture, of course.

Also, I had a few stressful moments at work and knew I needed to refocus. By the time I got home, I was trying to relax; however, I was still a bit agitated. Lydia then asked me to pick her up from the high school a block away because she was hot, and it was hot outside.

I agreed to pick up Lydia, although she is fully capable of walking to and from school. Still, when I saw her, I was a little annoyed to see that she was wearing sweatpants and Uggs — definitely not a good choice when it is 80+ degrees! Teenagers…  🙂

I decided to make pasta for dinner, specifically, a box of cavatappi noodles. These are like corkscrews, and I was eager to enjoy them since the shape was kinda fun.

Well, I left the kitchen and asked Lydia to finish the noodles. I expected her to wait until they were fully cooked and then drain them. For whatever reason, she only watched them for a couple of minutes before draining the noodles. Apparently, Lydia likes them still crunchy, but I prefer them softer.

Well, the only way to fix the noodles would have been to reboil them. I didn’t want to do that… I was too hungry and too irked to wait! Lydia could tell I was a little grouchy and apologized several times. I told her it was fine, but that her saying sorry was also “too much,” especially just for pasta.

After dinner, we each went our own ways. I started my blog post (this one!) and she worked on some homework downstairs. About when I got to this point, I went downstairs to check on Lydia. I apologized for my bad attitude, and she again apologized for the undercooked pasta. 🙂

My neck still hurt, but I needed to keep moving forward. I happened to read a little table calendar with a short prayer: “Lord, help me to rest in You, keep a quiet heart, and look forward with hopeful expectation to the things You are working together for good.”

I started to thank God for all the ways He has been moving lately. We’ve had amazing weather, uncharacteristically warm (but not too hot). I’m on top of my winter house preparations list. Lydia has been doing well at school, and work can get crazy, but I appreciate having a good job. We have plenty of food and clothes. I have amazing friends and an awesome family. So, I just need to chill.

I have no reason to stay perturbed for long. If things don’t go my way, it’s not the end of the world. Life is too short not to enjoy it. Thankfully, I was able to get over myself, lol!

On some level, these minor annoyances can also be viewed as a spiritual attack. The enemy only pushes us when we are making progress. When he feels threatened, he tries to trip us up. If I weren’t doing something important, he wouldn’t bother. So, consider this a reminder to check your pride and ego, as well as anything that might hinder your progress. Use God’s armor to remind our enemy of the Victory we already have in Jesus!

**********

Heavenly Father, thanks for being in my corner. Forgive me for my bad attitude. Help me walk in Your Truth with eyes wide open. In Jesus’ Name, Amen

Question: How have you turned a bad attitude around to praise God?

Task: Don’t live by your feelings, but pay attention when you are in a funky mood. Catch it, check it, and change it!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This was a great week, and I saw God work all around me!

On Monday, I started a ministry training class at church. We will be covering two courses this semester and two next semester. It will be a commitment, and also a great opportunity. I don’t know all that God has in store for me, but I am excited to learn and grow!

Work was steady but really good. There is always a lot going on, but it always feels worthwhile. I am happy to be where God has me, making a difference!

On Tuesday, I had an appointment which has me thinking about possibilities and answered prayers. I might have a decision to make, but I am still researching the information presented. I am grateful for how God guides and cares for me!

This week, I received garden-fresh beets and carrots from a friend at work. I roasted them last night, and they are delicious. After that, a neighbor gave us some freshly-picked sweet corn! I love it when people share the bounty of the season!

I woke up early this morning with lots of energy and ideas. I decided to organize a few spots around the house and started right away. I did not complete all that I wanted to do, but now I have a plan. 😉 I also mowed, did laundry, and cut up watermelon. With the long weekend, I hope to make more progress!

This afternoon, Lydia and I attended a little friend’s third birthday party. It was fun to see how much she has changed in one year! I pray God will do mighty things in her life and that she will one day trust in Him as her Lord and Savior.

Let Us Salad

On Sunday, Lydia and I served at church during a lunch gathering for the Older Adults Still In Service (OASIS) ministry. This is for seniors to enjoy fellowship and implies that although they likely have retired, they are not done living, giving, serving, etc. God still has a good plan and purpose for each person until He calls them Home.

Lydia has a heart for the elderly, so I arranged a time for us to help out. My goal is to let her experience various ways to serve. We really enjoyed it! We set up tables and chairs, then added place settings, and more. Later, we picked up garbage, cleaned the tables, put away the chairs, swept, and so on. We did not do it for recognition, but many people thanked us. I think we will do it again!

The potluck meal’s theme was “salads,” and people brought a variety of dishes. I recognized a retired NDSU nutrition professor, and we agreed that some were definitely from an old church cookbook somewhere! 🙂 We sat with her and enjoyed talking with all the seniors around us. We met some new people but also saw several we knew, including a few who have watched Lydia grow over the years.

In the Midwest, it seems just about anything can pass for a salad. We had taco salad, potato salad, macaroni salad, cucumber salad, multiple jello-type salads, fruit salad (with whipped cream, of course), a couple more dessert salads, and one token green salad. Many of the older adults took home leftovers, which made me happy as a Registered Dietitian.

After everyone ate, there was some worship time followed by a short sermon. We sang several hymns, and then the pastor asked us if we wanted another salad. We were all pleasantly full, but he went on to talk about the “let us salads” of Scripture.

Here a few:

Romans 13:12 (NIV) says, “The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.”

2 Corinthians 7:1 (NIV) says, “Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.”

Hebrews 4:16 (NIV) says, “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

Galatians 5:25-26 (NIV) says, “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.”

There are even some “let us nots!”

Galatians 6:9-10 (NIV) says, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”

1 Thessalonians 5:6 (NIV) says, “So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober.

Well, I will never look at the phrase “let us” the same way again. It was a creative tie-in and pun, as well as a fun memory for us while we helped others. Let us spur each other on to good works!

**********

God, thanks for helping us spread Your lovingkindness to others. May we serve with joy and a grateful heart. In Jesus’ Name, Amen

Questions: What is your favorite type of salad? Where do you like to volunteer?

Task: Read through more “let us” phrases. Some are just part of the narrative, but some of them are very applicable to us today!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This week felt really busy, as I was exhausted from traveling and evening activities upon our return from Nashville. But, God is faithful and helped me each day!

On Tuesday, I purposely went into work a little late due to our trip. Then, I left early to take Lydia to her last volleyball camp. I also worked on my weekly blog post.

Work was busy as usual, but I managed to keep up with most of my charting. That night, I took Lydia to camp, and my neighbor came to check out my washing machine. It had stopped working before our trip, but that night, it started right up! I decided to run a load after he left, but then the water wouldn’t stop running. It overflowed onto the floor, though I caught it fairly quickly and was able to clean it up!

On Thursday morning, I called an appliance repairman suggested by my neighbor. I hope he is accurate in what he thinks is wrong (based on my description). It will be at least next week until it is fixed, as next Wednesday is the best time for both of our schedules. Thankfully, we have plenty of clothes and can still use the machine with a little finagling. Essentially, I have to manually adjust the dials and monitor the process to prevent overfilling.

Friday was a jam-packed day, but again, God helped it all to flow well. I had a few scheduled patients at work, but only saw one of them, lol. Then, in the afternoon, I made a couple of calls to family before getting my oil changed. After that, Lydia and I mowed the lawn, which had grown quite a bit due to storms while we were gone. It was good to get it done before more rain! I also completed a few maintenance tasks, so it was quite productive!

Today, we continued to knock other chores off my list. I cooked sweet potatoes, cabbage, and cut up some watermelon. Tonight, Lydia is hanging out with a friend. I am relaxing after a long week, just as another storm rolls in. Maybe I will see a rainbow!

From Passover to Easter

I have been learning a lot about Passover and Easter lately! This year, Passover was last Saturday (4/12), and Easter is this coming Sunday (4/20). Perhaps they are on my radar because Season 5 of The Chosen is all about Holy Week and the Last Supper. For me, the hope we find in Jesus’ resurrection is especially poignant amid grief.

I’ve found many helpful videos providing insights into the first-century Jewish culture and the elements of the seder dinner. It is fascinating! The Last Supper, as we call it today, was the first and only mention in Scripture of how the annual Passover seder was held, outside the actual Exodus from Egypt.

Recently, I watched a Bible Project lesson on the meaning of the word Hebrew ‘pesakh.’ Surprisingly, it does not refer to ‘passing over’ but rather to a protective covering (like a mother hen). So, yes, during the Exodus, the Angel of Death passed over the houses containing the blood of the lamb, but God also hovered over them with His fierce protection. Additionally, He gave the Israelites specific instructions on what and how to eat so they would be ready to leave Egypt at a moment’s notice!

The word seder means ‘order,’ and each of the fifteen components is important. The Haggadah is a liturgical text retelling the Exodus from Egypt. For brevity, I will review a few key points that have stood out to me and post some videos that explain more at the end.

There are four cups of wine during a seder dinner based on four promises of redemption found in Exodus 6:6-7. First is the cup of sanctification, being set apart for God’s purposes. Then, the cup of judgment recalls the Egyptian plagues, and the cup of redemption, the sacrificed lamb and its blood. Lastly, the cup of hallel has to do with praise (as in hallelujah). Certain foods and songs coincide with each stage of the meal.

Jesus instituted His new covenant with the third cup. He is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! He reframed each part of the meal and showed His disciples how each part pointed to Him. Though, they didn’t fully understand it until after Jesus died and rose again!

Free christianity communion passover illustration

When Jesus broke bread with the Disciples, He used unleavened bread. This was not just a pita! Matzoh has stripes and is pierced with holes, foreshadowing how Jesus was tortured. Somewhere along the way, another tradition began with putting three matzoh in a cloth bag. The middle one is broken and hidden for children to find at the end of the meal for a prize. The word for this is borrowed from Greek, ‘afikoman,’ meaning “I have come” or “I am coming.” Jewish scholars have various ideas about this, but it makes the most sense that it represents Jesus. He is the second part of the Trinity, and His body was broken, buried (hidden), and brought back. Wow!

As modern Christians, we miss a lot of the meaning found in the seder meal. I attended one many years ago but now would like to revisit it someday! While in some ways, our Communion is like a mini seder, we can see Jesus in every part of the meal. God is so good to help us remember and look for Him along the way!

We can’t really have the Easter Resurrection without Passover. Some years, the calendars are linked closer together, but both are intricately connected. I’m so grateful for the hope we have in Jesus. Learning about His life and culture makes me love Him even more!

Heavenly Father, thanks for the love, mercy, grace, peace, and new life we can access through Christ Jesus. May we live worthy of His sacrifice. In Jesus’ name, Amen

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This felt like a longer week, but overall, it was good.

At work, I had a few meetings and lots of great patients. I had some good conversations with several coworkers and worked on some annual competencies. I also had several Veterans who were grateful to meet with me. Despite the political drama nationally, I am glad to be a federal employee and feel proud of my service role.

The weather was a bit warmer in the 40s. On Wednesday, I told a friend, “This is amazing for February…” and she reminded me that it was January! But, of course, today is the first of February, and we are getting a dusting of snow. 😉

I had a lot of good conversations with family and friends this week. I am so glad for all the people in my circle!

Today, I relaxed a bit at home and then ran around the VA kitchen, as I picked up an evening shift. I was filling in, but someone also called in sick, so it was good I went in. It always feels good to work hard!
