Worthy of Honor

I heard something interesting recently. One difference between praising God and worshiping God is how we talk about it. While the connection may be a little more complex, it made a lot of sense to me. Praise happens in the third person; that is, we talk about Him to people. We tell others how He is working in our lives. Worship is when we talk to God directly. We tell Him how amazing He is!

So, that has me thinking about how often I praise God versus how often I worship Him. I am the only one in all of creation who can worship and honor God like I do. And, you are the only one who can worship God in your way. We are made in His image, yet still unique.

One day soon, those who love God will be singing “holy, holy, holy.” So, if we don’t speak up or sing out, that part of the heavenly chorus is missing. Even so, during His triumphal entry into Jerusalem during Holy Week, Jesus said that if the people didn’t praise Him, then the rocks would cry out.

At church lately, we have been singing a song called “Worthy” by Elevation Worship. I can’t recall all the lyrics from one day to the next, but that doesn’t matter. All I need to remember is that only Jesus is worthy of my worship and praise. He is above all and greater than everything!

That song has been waking me up, and I am glad Jesus is on my mind first thing. Whatever I have going on in my day or life, Jesus is bigger and better. My problems are not problems for Jesus! He doesn’t face the same obstacles; He has overcome them all!

So, when I worship Him, I agree with Him. I come into alignment with Him and His purposes for me. When I praise, I tell others all about Jesus, and we build up our faith. As I pray, telling Jesus about my problems, those very same problems hear how strong and mighty Jesus is! It’s a good trade! My problems will either be resolved, or I will grow in His strength and handle them with His grace.

It all starts with Jesus. Only He is worthy of all our praise and worship. We must lay down anything else that would compete with Him. Your phone, job, hobby, schedule, distractions, not even your family… nothing and no one is worthy of all your praise and worship besides Jesus! Honor Him today!

When we seek Jesus first, He will take care of the rest! He is our treasure and our reward. We don’t have to strive because in Him is life and all we need.

Finding Grace #533

You may have seen the acronym GRACE as God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. Grace is also God’s unmerited favor, or God doing for us what we cannot.

I find grace overflowing with God’s love, joy, peace, blessings, mercy, power, provision, protection, and wisdom. Thank You, Jesus!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This week was very full but good! I had a ton of small and big tasks to do, some of which had deadlines. Each day, I have done a few instead of trying to do them all at once.

I noticed my attitude was a little short on a couple of occasions. Certain things kept annoying me, but I noticed them and gave them to the Lord. I am grateful He is bigger than all my perceived problems!

One huge perk is that the gorgeous flowering trees are in full bloom this week. I took a few detours around town so I could stop and take pictures. White, light pink, dark pink…. not to mention the purple lilac bushes! I cannot get enough! I also noticed my tulips are starting to bloom!

We arrived home on Monday afternoon from Illinois. We had a two-hour weather delay, so I didn’t have as much time to run errands and do chores as I had planned. So, that meant catching up throughout the week. This included mowing, preparing for some high school graduation parties, grocery shopping, paying bills, etc.

Work was fairly busy with patient care, meetings, and projects. I had a couple of patients who needed a little more care, both physical support and someone to listen to them. I was honored to help them.

Lydia finished up middle school on Thursday!! She had a sleepover with friends to celebrate. Then, she came home on Friday and slept for several hours! I guess she needed it!

On Friday, I left work early for my annual physical. I really like my new primary care provider. Then, I ran several errands in the drizzling rain… I’m glad I mowed the night before when we had perfect weather!

Today, I hung out with my work friends. I love that we can do that and enjoy each other’s company. Specifically, we went to a foodie event downtown. We walked around sampling food for three hours (each just a bite, and we walked 7000 steps!). It was so much fun!

Next, Lydia and I are going to a graduation party. This Caterpillar family is the reason we are in Fargo (Dave’s boss). I remember when the kids were so little, and it has been fun to watch them grow. I know God has good things in store for them!

Rest, Relax, Recap

On Thursday of last week, Lydia and I flew to Illinois to spend time with family. We had a lot of fun at the barefoot shoe expo, but we also enjoyed just hanging out. We ate good food, went to a school fundraiser for my nephew, ran errands, watched a couple of movies, played games, and laughed a lot. We missed my mom and Dave, of course, but we know they would be thrilled we got together.

On Saturday, my sister and I went to the expo in Schaumburg. We also took Lydia to Woodfield Mall. As we sat in the food court eating lunch, we were people watching. People of all sorts of cultures were there, and many fashions were also represented. We smiled at a few people’s choices, but we know that’s not always the full picture. Among the hundreds of people, some are likely brothers and sisters in Christ. Then I had a thought: I wonder if someday in Heaven, we will recognize each other. “Oh yeah, you’re the one with the tattoos, piercings, hot pink hair, and neon dress at the mall!” 🙂 I hope so!

My family and I also had several other good conversations. We talked about God’s goodness and His patience. It seems that often, someone who is good and godly will die, and God will leave the hateful jerk no one likes. It doesn’t seem fair, but we can trust that God knows best. In fact, 2 Peter 3:9 says (NLT), “The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.” What mercy! You can also read more here.

We discussed some current events and hot topics. None of us is worried because we see world events through a different lens. We also reviewed some short-term and long-term plans. At various times, we mentioned prayer requests and other concerns. I am so grateful for my family of faith.

On Monday, some of us went to breakfast on the way to the airport. As we waited for our food to come, we asked each other what we were reading for our time with the Lord. Some had very specific Bible reading plans and devotional books. And some were taking an in-depth approach to a book of the Bible. I shared that I had been reading the Gospels and recently moved on to Acts. I like to have two or three different Bible translations open to compare as I go.

Finally, we discussed what Heaven will be like. The new Heaven will combine with the new Earth. It is a physical place, not just a bunch of clouds and harps! Anyway, my family talked about all the cool things we will get to do with our new resurrection bodies. Maybe we will hike mountains without tiring and see all sorts of wild animals with no real danger. Alaska is on my bucket list, but can you imagine how wonderful the new Alaska will be? I don’t have to worry if I don’t get to go in this lifetime – I will have eternity to check it out! I also hope we’ll get to explore other planets or galaxies! Only God knows!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This week flew by! We had a whirlwind mix of work, school events, and traveling!

Mother’s Day was on Sunday. We enjoyed church, seeing friends, and then relaxed. I am grateful for the love and support of so many wonderful ladies!

On Monday, I had an orthodontist appointment. We talked about my MARPE plan after the 3D mockup. The good news is that I am done with turns! I don’t have any other appointments until August, and then we will discuss our next steps.

On Tuesday, Lydia had her final middle school orchestra concert. (That’s hard to believe!!) In addition, she had to get a new (rental) viola because a seam was busted on her other one. She also got a new bow. At some point, we’ll have to decide if we keep renting or buy a viola. Decisions, decisions!

Wednesday evening was an orientation at the high school. Lydia is a little nervous but also excited about the fall. She has some experience already, having been there several times for Congress, Speech, and some orchestra events. Because of extracurricular activities, Lydia has grown in confidence this year, and I know God will be with her!

I crammed a lot of work into a few short days! Lots of patients and lots of charting, lol! My coworkers complimented me on my unique way of teaching difficult concepts in a practical, memorable way. That made me feel good, and I am glad they trust my input!

Friday was the thirteenth anniversary of Dave’s death. I have been able to take it off for several years in a row. It is a gift to myself, so I don’t have to pretend to be upbeat if I am not feeling it. It’s not that I will automatically feel sad, but I just give myself the day off so I can “be” and do whatever I want. We usually celebrate by doing fun things and eating good food in his honor.

The best part of the week is that we hopped onto a plane to visit family! Some of us went to a barefoot shoe expo today, and tonight we are hanging out with the others.

Fan the Flame

Last Friday, I attended our church’s weekly prayer meeting. I am glad I went, though honestly, I considered skipping it since it had been a long week. Still, I decided to go with a good attitude and expectant heart, a sacrifice to honor the Lord.

I walked in, sat with a friend, and waved to a few more. It turned out to be a really good experience with the Lord! Just what I needed.

In addition to worship and prayer, we happened to have a special guest. He was an evangelist with roots in our church from about 45 years ago! He told some cool “God stories” and then gave a brief sermon.

The topic was about not quenching the Holy Spirit, protecting His holy fire in our hearts, and fanning the flame of our faith. Satan hates our relationship with God and wants to pull us away from all Jesus has for us. He wants to kill our passion and influence, and he is always looking for ways to get us off track.

So, if you find yourself disinterested or feeling blah about God’s work, then you need to fight to stay close to Jesus. Check your heart and discipline your flesh; consider fasting and re-establishing good boundaries. Get rid of distractions and tune your heart to the Master.

To fan the flame, we must pray without ceasing. Fervent prayer, mentioned in James 5:16, leads to tremendous power and spiritual energy. Prayer, quite simply, is a two way conversation. Sometimes we talk and sometimes we listen. That said, we also must steward our time, energy, and resources. How we love, pray, and serve matters. Let’s choose wisely!

We also fan the flame when we invest in our relationship with God. To start, we do this by praising Him, reading His word, talking to Him, and asking the Holy Spirit to help us. In the parable of the ten virgins, five were prepared with oil, and five missed out because they were not prepared. The oil is symbolic of the Holy Spirit and the time we put in with Him to work in our lives. We cannot live off someone else’s faith!

Later, we were all praying together as the speaker closed. He went around and had a word of prophecy for a few of us. This is basically a special insight and calling out God’s truth in our lives. He addressed a few physical conditions with healing prayers. This included a couple of people with gut issues, and he then asked if there was anyone with neck issues. After a minute of no one stepping forward, I said, “Oh, maybe that’s me!” I was surprised!

He prayed for my neck, then asked a few questions about me (to get a fuller picture and make sense of things). I don’t recall all he said in the moment, but the main takeaway was that I felt “seen” by God. Yes, the healing words were important, but the personal connection with Jesus is what meant the most to me!

Sometimes we need those little personalized reminders of God’s love. He does not owe us anything; in fact, the opposite is true! But He is so kind and gracious to bless us. I would have rather stayed home, but in faith, I went, and He had a sweet message for me. Thank You, Jesus!

A Hymn Sing-Along

On Sunday, Lydia and I helped serve at OASIS. We cut up watermelon and prepared sandwiches. We set up tables and added place settings. We greeted some of the regulars and even saw some older friends we hadn’t seen in years. One was a dear lady who gave feedback on my book all those years ago!

Usually, if we are able to stay for the meal, Lydia and I sit and visit with everyone. It is heartwarming to hear stories from these older folks. Often, we listen to a short sermon afterward while we eat dessert.

This week, instead of a sermon, we had a hymn sing-along! It was so much fun. We used the old-school hymnals, and people called out song requests.

Hymns are special because, unlike modern worship songs, many of them have been around for centuries. They hold so much church history and theology! As a parent, I want Lydia to understand the importance of these traditions. We don’t give up when times get tough. We hold fast to Jesus!

As we sang through maybe ten or fifteen songs, I was a little overcome with emotion. There was a bit of nostalgia, since I grew up singing various hymns over the years. We didn’t go to a church that used hymns every week, but many of them are well-known. We sang them at home, with the radio or just because, and even a few select choruses at camp.

We certainly sang a few hymns at Dave’s funeral almost thirteen years ago! On Sunday, I was reminded of this as we sang “Victory in Jesus.” I got a little teary-eyed as I thought about how far God has brought us. After we sang “Amazing Grace,” I even said inwardly, “I would really like to sing ‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus,'” since we also sang that at Dave’s funeral.

Immediately, to my delight, that song was requested! It touched my heart and made me know God was watching me, blessing me, and drawing me close. That’s the thing about these old songs – they help us connect with Jesus.

The last song we sang was “Jesus Loves Me.” When Dave was sick, some days this was the only song we could sing. We had no energy, and our hearts were down and out. All we could do was bring our brokenness to the Lord. When I could barely think straight or make sense of all the chaos, this song was the only thing that came out. God’s Truth that was placed there when I was so little, and when life pressed in, that was the foundation!

I’m not alone in the fact that “Jesus Loves Me” is one of those that many little children learn. In fact, as we wrapped up, Lydia and I smiled at each other. She had a cute way of singing it with a hearty emphasis. “…Little ones to him belong, they are weak, but he is… STRONG!”

The next time you find yourself at a hymnal sing-along, I pray you will take it in stride. Soak up the Truth and consider the strong traditions. If you listen closely, you’ll hear the voices of the Saints, a precursor to Heaven, when we all worship Jesus together!

A Thousand Generations Faithful

Over the last couple of weeks, I have rediscovered a show from years ago. I have been enjoying “Who Do You Think You Are?” on YouTube (both the British and American versions!). This is similar to the PBS show, “Finding Your Roots,” and follows celebrities on genealogical journeys around the world.

Watching the show made me go check out my own family tree. I have a large paper copy showing many generations of my family. However, I don’t know everyone’s occupations or exact circumstances. Maybe I will do a little more digging someday!

Some of the family stories on the show are heartwarming, and some are shocking or sad. We are taken along through a range of emotions, and I appreciate seeing famous actors and singers in a new light. On the one hand, they just hop on a plane on a whim to travel to another continent to track down their ancestors. Yet, their humility makes them feel more down-to-Earth.

While you and I probably don’t have the same access or resources to travel several generations back, we can still learn from others. As the celebrities go back in time, they see how their family members lived, loved, and died during eras such as the American Revolution, the Civil War, the Industrial Revolution, Prohibition, World War II, and the Holocaust. Many were immigrants, and some were refugees. Some of their families came from kings, business owners, and upstanding community members, and some descended from pirates, thieves, and murderers!

Deuteronomy 7:9 - Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.

Old family legends or fears are discovered or clarified. The celebrities have to work through their emotions of being mad, embarrassed, proud, or giving the benefit of the doubt. Several of them have gained a better understanding of generational trauma and seen it in a new light. I am glad for forgiveness and closure.

Of course, family is so important. Your personal connections can set you up for success or set you back in life. On these shows, it is easy to see how one life can positively or negatively impact successive generations. We can live with faith, courage, and determination. Or, we can live selfishly with bitterness and resentment, hurting others. Our choices are not in isolation.

Indeed, family can be quite complicated at times. We collectively have many opportunities but also face many hurts, trials, and misfortunes. And, we won’t always agree with each other! Still, we can put down strong roots, and even one decision can change our family tree, to some degree. It has been said before, “You may not have had a good start, but you can have a good finish.”

Regardless of familial twists and turns, here’s the Good News: Even if you don’t have much family support, God has invited you to join His family! He is a-thousand-generations-faithful!! His Son Jesus paved the way for us… Have you accepted His offer?

Beyond that, if your ancestors knew Jesus personally as Lord and Savior, you will certainly see them again! Can you imagine getting to meet all these people in Heaven?! We will have eternity to catch up and tell stories of perseverance and grace. At the same time, my heart breaks for those in my close circle who don’t want to hear about Jesus!

Heavenly Father, thanks for Your faithfulness and preservation! You extend grace and mercy to us, even when we don’t deserve it. Increase our passion to share Your love with our family and others so we may see them in Heaven one day! In Jesus’ Name, Amen

This week felt busy because of work, but it actually all went smoothly.

Thanks for the support on my MARPE update. I appreciate the encouragement and prayers! 🙂

I talked with some fun Veterans this week. One was a little younger than me very concerned about potential heart disease. He had done an awesome job of making changes, and I was able to cheer him on and clarify some details. I also spoke with a man in his nineties who was very spry and asked about any changes he should make. That said, I’m sure his years of good habits are paying off for him now! It is so gratifying when people are eager to learn.

Lydia was able to sit out during gym this week, and she was a different person… much more energetic!  She has been slowly adding other “POTS-friendly” activities, like rowing or biking. But, I’m hopeful this is a start to her feeling better consistently.

Spring is definitely here! The temperatures have been up and down. My tulips are popping up, though it might be another week or so until they bloom. I added some books to my little free library, as I’ve seen a lot of people using it lately. Also, I might have to mow one of these days, but I hope to hold off for a bit! 😉

Today, I was on call for work but did not get called in. Woohoo! I worked on my last chapters for my church class. Lydia did some chores that I “required” before she was allowed to go shopping with a friend. It’s amazing how fast she got everything done, lol!

Helping or Hindering?

On Monday, I was teaching a class, the fifth in a series on healthy lifestyle changes. Now, Veterans are at a higher risk of essentially any illness or chronic condition you can think of compared to the general population. This includes financial concerns, relationship problems, PTSD, drug abuse, alcoholism, and homelessness.

Many of the Veterans in my class were struggling with a variety of issues. Sadly, that is to be expected on some level. But the class was meant to introduce some action steps to address some of the health issues and perhaps ease their mental and emotional concerns as well. We talked about nutrition, stress management, sleep, exercise, resiliency, gratitude, etc.

What struck me was that even as the class ended, many of the people were still stuck in the past. One person would ask a question or share an experience, then others would chime in and commiserate. There were some tears and some laughter, and I think it was a good thing overall. However, some of the people almost worked themselves up as a result.

It was as if they couldn’t let themselves rest or relax. I know hypervigilance is common and can be difficult to change, yet letting go of what we cannot control (past, present, and future) is vital. In Romans 12, we are called to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. I wanted to share that Jesus calls us to bring our burdens to Him, but that wasn’t really the scope of the class. Instead, I sprinkled tidbits of faith here and there. 

I did not feel called to share my story, but I did explain that we all have past hardships, trauma, or grief. No one is immune. But we must check our words and even our thoughts in order to keep moving forward.

Several people made up their minds to try new things, but I’m curious how many of them will let go of their anxiety and worry, understanding that we don’t “have to” live in fear. I will be praying for the class that they might take a step of faith and trust Jesus. I’ll pray they realize how much God loves them and wants to give them His joy and peace.

Our stories — and how we tell them — are powerful. We can rehash all the old hurts and fears, or we can let the Lord redeem them and make something beautiful out of our darkest moments. It’s never easy, but it is our choice to make.

Heavenly Father, thanks for setting us free from all our burdens – sin, shame, sickness – so we don’t have to stay stuck. Help us walk in that freedom and grace. Keep us close to You, in Jesus’ Name, Amen

The Lord’s Prayer

This week, I have been reviewing the Lord’s prayer! This is found in Matthew 6 and Luke 11. It is perhaps the most underutilized piece of Jesus’ direct teaching! The words are not magical; they help us remember our mission.

Often, if you’ve grown up in a church that uses this as part of its daily or weekly liturgy, it can become so familiar that it feels mundane. But we must slow down and take the time to understand the background of Jesus’ meaning. Then, with humility and expectation, we can connect more fully to God’s heart and power.

On Monday night, I listened to a Blurry Creatures Podcast episode featuring a couple of guys who put together both a movie and a TV show about The Lord’s Prayer. Essentially, we can remind ourselves of who God is and our role in His Kingdom. They broke down each phrase, like I did last week!

So, on my Tuesday morning drive, I prayed through the prayer slowly. Father in Heaven: Now, I have a great earthly dad, and it’s amazing that God is even a better dad than Tom! 🙂 Heaven refers to Ancient Near Eastern cosmology (as described in the podcast), but for my purposes, it’s helpful to remember that God is above all things, visible and invisible. He is all-powerful but still loves us fiercely.

Hallowed is an older word for holy, meaning “set apart as sacred.” I sang this song because it reminds me of God’s character and of how we must respect and revere Him. He is not someone we can casually disregard. Carrying His Name means we bear responsibility to represent Him well. Yet, He has great grace for us when we fail to live up to His standard. Thankfully, that’s one reason Jesus came! 

Regarding the next phrase, we live to serve God, not our own purposes. It’s His Kingdom, not ours. Yes, we are citizens of Heaven and can bring many of those benefits to Earth through prayer. But our requests must align with God’s purposes and plan. He is not obligated to give us everything we want!

This is in line with the concept of daily bread. Jesus’ disciples would have thought about the manna their ancestors received in the desert for forty years. God took care of the essentials, but they depended on Him. This is where I asked for help in my workday and thanked God for all the ways He has provided for me this week. It was a good way to reflect on His grace and goodness.

The last part is about forgiveness. When we hold grudges, we act as if God’s mercy cannot cover someone’s faults or mistakes. But we forget how much we have needed it! For me, it is about trust. I can trust that God will take care of the other person as He sees fit. I can let it go and give it to Him to handle. Indeed, I can rest in the knowledge that God won’t hold my sins against me because Jesus already paid for them on the Cross.

Surprisingly, I learned that the phrase “for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory” is a doxology likely added in later manuscripts for liturgical reasons to make it sound more complete. It is not original to Jesus, but still quite compelling! Everything we are should reflect glory back to our Heavenly Father!

Finally, God does not lead us into temptation… but He does allow us to be tested. May we stand firm in our faith and trust Him. It’s okay (natural even) to doubt and ask questions, as long as they lead us closer to Jesus. He is faithful and will never let us down.

All that to say, I loved the conversation I had with the Lord driving to work. It set the tone for my day. It got my mind off “me” and put it back on Him. Yet, I still had a space to tell Him what I needed. I think I will make it part of my regular practice!
