Finding Grace #527

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This was a pretty quiet week!

At work, I covered the inpatient hospital all week, so I didn’t see as many of my usual outpatient Veterans. It was less busy than I expected, thankfully! The hospitalized patients were not as complicated as I have seen, and it helped to have several days in a row so I could anticipate their needs.

Lydia had a POTS flare-up this week and came home early from school on Wednesday. She made it to school on Thursday and Friday, but came straight home afterward to rest. to two healthcare appointments. She skipped Speech practices and also her final Speech event today because she felt so depleted. Her energy is a little better tonight, but I am glad we decided to have her stay home and rest today.

With Lydia under the weather, I kept my schedule pretty open in the evenings so I could be available for her. When she feels so weak, I like to stick around to help get anything she might need. We talked again about knowing when to push ourselves and when to rest and relax. A good lesson for us both!

Today, I did some reading and studying. Otherwise, I made some calls and mostly just relaxed! I enjoyed hearing the birds chirp and watching it drizzle a bit as the grass grows greener. God is good!

Finding Grace #526

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This week was full of praises for the Lord. We have much to be grateful for!

Work went well. It was busy, as usual, but I felt good about what I accomplished!

I took Lydia to two healthcare appointments. The first was just a routine lab draw, and all that went well. The next one was audiology for Lydia’s tinnitus. Dave was born partially deaf, and we just monitor Lydia’s ears to catch anything if it changes. She potentially has a tiny bit of hearing loss, but it is difficult to tell for sure because of the ringing in her ears. However, she is used to it, and it has not affected her at all day-to-day. However, even a small change each year could add up over a decade or more. For the most part, everything is stable, and that is a really good thing!

We celebrated Good Friday at church yesterday. It is always a solemn event, as we remember Jesus’ bloody sacrificial death. Lydia and I watched The Chosen (season 5) to prepare during the week. It helps to envision what happened leading up to the Crucifixion. If you would like to watch The Chosen’s version of the Last Supper, here it is all in one spot. Thank You, Jesus!!

We had some cooler weather again this week, which is not unusual for Spring. Funnily enough, we went from no snow to a lot of snow over a few days. In fact, even just overnight and into this afternoon, we’ve had several inches again! I went outside to take some pictures, and the birds were SO loud. I bet they were having an emergency meeting to figure out who said they should come back ‘so soon’! Anyway, I loved seeing all the robins, juncos, and even blackbirds flying around and sitting in my five trees!

Finding Grace #525

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This week had some ups and downs, but I saw God’s faithfulness anyway. 

First, this week had an element of death. A dear friend had a miscarriage the day after she discovered she was pregnant. A beloved aunt (by marriage) lost her sister after a brief illness, similar to my mom’s. Both of these were very sad, and I tried to support both of these ladies with God’s help. He comforts the brokenhearted and is near to them.

I also have some really good news regarding my teeth and MARPE. I had an X-ray to check on my palate, and it is right on track. Even though the gap between my teeth has been minimal, the X-ray shows I’ve already had a six millimeter expansion! This is close to what I need, so we will hold off on further turns of my device for now. Next month, I will have more detailed scans and 3D modeling to see whether there are any benefits to further expansion or if I am fully done. This also depends on my bottom teeth, which are moving more slowly because of our plan. Either way, I’ll still have the device in my mouth for six months to help things stabilize after we finalize the process. I’ve had ideal progress so far, praise God!

On Thursday, Lydia and I woke up to a chilly house. I didn’t think anything of it at first, except when she mentioned it. I happened to take a look at the thermostat, and it was totally blank (dead). I changed the batteries, but that didn’t help. I waited a little while, prayed, and asked my neighbor who to call. I had a man come over in the afternoon; he just adjusted the batteries, and it turned right on! He double-checked the furnace, then started putting his shoes back on. He said I didn’t need to pay anything, but I offered to pay him something for coming all that way. I gave him twenty dollars for the trouble! Win-win!

My blog website was down for about an hour one evening. The server was down on my blog hosting site. This occasionally happens, but it usually gets fixed right away. I spent some time on the phone with tech support, but there was nothing wrong on my end. Thankfully, I wasn’t hacked and didn’t lose any of my data or posts. Lydia and I prayed for God to protect everything, and it all turned out well!

I saw the first robin of Spring this week! I also saw some other song birds and woke up to their singing. The weather has been windy and cold with a few flurries, but also sunny and warmer on a few days… I also am seeing the grass green up a bit. I love this time of year!

Finding Grace #524

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This week was good overall. The only negative thing was that my left ear popped on both Tuesday and Thursday as a result of my MARPE journey. The bones in my face are slowly moving around, and I think the pressure changes forced air out of my ear. It was very painful, as if the bones collapsed. Thankfully, this is fairly common, and my ear was not damaged at all. It was just a little shocking since it came out of nowhere… once, I was driving! Later, I recognized the same thing happened to my nose a month ago… The jolt feels like someone punched me, but only lasts a few seconds. On Thursday, the pain radiated down my jaw and lasted for around 36 hours, and I called my orthodontist. I have been praying that God would prevent this from happening again because it is scary. Still, I know I don’t ‘have to’ be afraid.

On Monday afternoon, I got my taxes done and then had a chiropractor appointment. I am so grateful for all the ways God provides for Lydia and me! I am getting a small refund, and I really appreciate how He works things out in my favor. That’s grace.

Lydia and I talked about confidence this week. She was feeling down, and I listened to her concerns and offered encouragement. We all feel that way sometimes, and it is not good to compare ourselves with others. I coached her through some issues and pointed her back to Scripture and Jesus. I pray she is on the right track now. All glory to God who always helps me with my parenting; He is such a good Father.

Today, Lydia celebrated the beginning of Spring with a little shopping. We just had fun going around town and buying some clothes and trinkets. We also got some fancy drinks and some Chik-Fil-A. Tonight, we are relaxing while watching a movie!

Full-Time Grace

March is National Nutrition Month, and today is Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist Day! I have been a dietitian for almost twenty years! I love what I get to do.

For nearly sixteen years (since moving to Fargo), I have worked part-time. I have overlapped time at a clinic, a nursing home, a hospital, a college, and now the VA. I’ve had stints of working forty hours a week to fill in here and there. But, on Monday, I officially bumped up my work hours to full-time! It’s a win-win for my team and me.

Working part-time hours was a major blessing when Dave died in May 2013. God knew I needed to have space to grieve, but He also let me have time with Lydia. I would take her to drop-in daycare when I worked, and then we could still go to the park or the zoo. Had I been working forty hours a week, my emotions and parenting would have taken a hit.

What a wonderful, gracious God!

I began working twenty hours a week at the VA in August 2019. It was more than I was doing before, and I was grateful for the opportunity. However, all that we do there is very high-level and takes a lot of effort to stay at the top of our game. So, getting all my tasks done was a challenge before I had to leave each day.

When COVID hit the following Spring, I was so glad to have my VA position because it also meant I was guaranteed daycare at the local Y. They never closed, and I never missed one day of work. God was so good to protect us and provide for us! Only He could know what was coming in advance!

Not long after, I was asked to go to thirty-four hours a week. It was still part-time, but I qualified for full-time benefits. At each age and stage of Lydia’s life, God has covered us! I would go in half an hour later than my coworkers and then work four hours on Fridays. I tended to call my mom, get groceries, or prioritize that time when making routine appointments.

I am a good worker, yet when my manager periodically asked me if I wanted to go full-time, I would politely decline. The money wasn’t the issue; I just wanted to make sure Lydia was in a good spot so I could be away a little more often. I didn’t feel like God gave me the green light until recently.

Over the last few months, Lydia has shone and grown in so many ways. She’s older, responsible, and has her own activities. Lydia continues to rise to whatever challenges arise. She will go to High School next fall! And while there will be more adjustments, I know God will see us through.

On Monday, I wasn’t even at work twenty minutes before I covered a walk-in patient on the fly. I didn’t mind, just took it in stride. I am glad for the chance to serve Veterans and want to do it for the Lord.

There are some obvious perks of working full-time, besides the additional money to help pay for my teeth and MARPE services. Someday soon, I will probably need to get another car (or two). One for me and/or one for Lydia! Plus, we will have college visits coming up, probably sooner than later. 😉

One thing is clear: Regardless of how much I work or earn, God has always given me full-time grace. He is not stingy! Grace is precisely NOT based on anything I can do but on what Jesus DID. We receive His everlasting favor and blessings. Thank You, Lord!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This week was full but went fast!

The weather was warmer and a little wet. But, we had a lot of melting and can see mostly grass now! It was a fairly mild winter!

On Monday night, I attended my monthly church training session. It was really good, and we discussed several controversial topics, which included Q&A. I left feeling solid in my faith and understood how to answer questions about key news topics.

Monday was my only full workday this week, in part since Lydia had a migraine at school and had to be picked up early on Tuesday. She took some medicine and then napped. The other reasons included appointments and my half-day on Friday.

I was cleared by my oral surgeon on Wednesday, and I also had an ortho appointment on Thursday.  Things look good, but I’m still having challenges with talking and eating. I think that’s par for the course! Both doctors are thorough and have provided great insights as my mouth heals and changes.

I’ve had a bad cold this week, or possibly an infection. I am feeling better day by day, but still have a minor cough and drainage. Plus, my throat is somewhat hoarse! I did go to the walk-in doctor and got some medication. I hope it helps kick whatever this is!

Lydia’s school hosted this week’s Speech tournament. I went to watch her with a couple of friends. She did great and placed sixth in her humorous duo!

Don’t forget to change your clocks for Daylight Saving Time tonight! We spring forward one hour!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This week was relatively slow and calm!

Lydia and I both had Monday night off for Presidents’ Day. I had an orthodontic appointment, which went well. Otherwise, we mostly relaxed and got caught up around the house.

Work was predictably busy, but that’s nothing new! We celebrated a coworker’s birthday, had a few meetings, and had lots of good patients. I was asked to work a full day on Friday to help provide coverage. I’m glad I did because I ended up seeing several patients!

The weather turned cold and snowy again this week! Of course, it is still only February, so what do we expect? I didn’t need to do much shoveling, since my snow service took care of the driveway, and my kind neighbors did the sidewalks!

Lydia was sick on Friday, so she stayed home from school. She also skipped her Speech tournament today. She has been working so hard, and I think her body just needed a break. Thankfully, she is feeling better now.

Today, I ran a few errands while Lydia rested. Otherwise, I did some Saturday things and then relaxed. We might watch a movie tonight!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This week was good and busy! We had our family Zoom on Monday night instead of Sunday night since that worked better for most everyone. It was kind of a fun twist!

Work was fast-paced as usual. I had a lot of extra phone calls and added patients, but it went well overall. I left early for an oral surgeon follow-up on Thursday and then stayed later on Friday to see a couple of patients and finish some charting from the day before.

My oral surgeon appointment went well. I am healing faster than expected and only have one small spot left to close up. We made a tentative gameplan to meet again in a few weeks. I think I see the slightest shift between my two front teeth. Not an official gap, but it is easier to floss in-between!

I am still playing around with what foods work best for me. I may just have to resolve to let foods get stuck, lol, and then clean out my MARPE device. I think it will be fine in the long-run, so I am not too worried.

I had a relaxing facial yesterday after work. It was a perk through a partnership with my orthodontist and a local spa. It felt great to be pampered!

I really enjoyed catching up with several friends and family this week. We all talked about various topics, including about my mom, my MARPE journey, parenting, barefoot/minimalist shoes, weather, birthdays, prayer, Jesus, and the Olympics!

Today, I watched Lydia perform her humorous duo at her Speech meet today. She came alive and was so funny playing four different characters. I am so proud of her.

Happy Valentine’s Day!! I had a great day watching Lydia, grocery shopping, making calls, and enjoying the “warm” and sunny 45-degree weather!! Feels like Spring… I didn’t even need my coat!

Well-Nourished

Last week, I had a cool conversation with a Veteran, and it confirmed I am right where God wants me! And to think, I almost missed the call! I ended up calling him about half an hour later because I had overlooked the appointment on my schedule. Ooops!

The man answered the phone right away and was forgiving. He was a little younger than me and had several food issues, including ulcerative colitis and food allergies, that were causing him much stress, fear, and anxiety. It was such an interesting conversation, and God opened a door to talk about spiritual matters.

Of course, we reviewed some strategies to help him avoid certain foods. We talked about how to communicate his needs to his family and about having a separate spot for some of his favorite foods, so he doesn’t feel left out. We discussed symptom management regarding his other eating issues. We came up with a game plan.

Then, I brought up how the vagus nerve is part of our fight or flight mechanism, and it connects the brain to the gut. If someone is mentally anxious, that can affect how well the gut processes food. Similarly, if the gut is struggling to digest something, that can impact the health of the brain. So, for this Veteran, it was cyclical!

We also talked about stress management and coping skills. He agreed that talking with a mental health counselor could be helpful. Then, he shared some spiritual concepts he is learning, and I let the conversation go that way. I am not paid to talk about Jesus, but I am allowed to share my faith. I don’t ever start with that, but it is always surprising how many people need spiritual support and connection. At the VA, we treat the whole person, and I am grateful to meet each person’s needs individually!

Subtly, I worked to apply Scripture to this man’s anxiety and fear. I said we are commanded to renew our minds (Romans 12:1-2), and that fear is not from God (2 Timothy 1:7). I explained how our enemy could be using his food issues to distract him from his greater purpose. I told the Veteran he could trust God with his meals, since Jesus wants the best for him and wants him well-nourished. At last, a lightbulb went on, and he said, “So I don’t have to be afraid. I can stay calm and use my Epi-Pen, if needed. It doesn’t have to be life or death every day!” He was both in awe and relieved.

At some point, this Veteran asked if I was a Christian. When I said yes, he asked if he could pray for me, and I could pray for him. I was happy to participate and prayed that God would give him peace and show him the power he has over his thoughts.

Later, I got to share with some of my coworkers what God had done. We talked about His goodness, faithfulness, and timing. Moreover, I was so happy God could use me both nutritionally and spiritually!

Food is nourishment, but so is God’s word! We can’t help others on our own; we need to be in our Bible daily, soaking it up so we have something to share. Last week, it was amazing to see the work Jesus has done in my heart, enabling me to call out fear in others and teach them to combat it with Scripture. Thank You, Lord!

Heavenly Father, thanks for using me to change this Veteran’s life by giving him a new perspective. Help him continue to make progress in renewing his mind. Give him health and guide our next conversation at his follow-up in a couple of weeks! In Jesus’ Name, Amen

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This was a bit of a wildcard week! It was good all around, but I was definitely depending on God to get everything done!

Monday was the biggest day with potential issues. I had work with several patients, an appointment, and my church training – all required some talking and focus. But, it all turned out just fine, praise God! It helps to have a soft heart!

I had an ortho appointment on Monday and an oral surgeon appointment on Tuesday. I am making good progress with my mouth healing, day by day. I am looking forward to taking the next steps of cranking my device soon!

The rest of the work-week went pretty well. I had some really good conversations with patients. None of them seemed to mind that my voice was still a little garbled post-expander placement (it’s getting better and more back to normal!).

I tried expanding my diet beyond liquids, soups, pasta, jello, pudding, and ice cream this week. Many foods still get caught in my expander, so I just do the best I can. It takes a long time to eat and then clean my mouth/device. I had a small cheeseburger and it took me about half an hour! It probably was not the best idea, so I will probably stick to those easier items for now. Hopefully, things will improve over the next month!

I met a friend for coffee yesterday after work. We spent a couple of hours catching up. We live close by but don’t get to see each other often, so we will have to do better about that!

Lydia had a Speech meet today, and I happily hung out at home. I usually have a list of things to do, but today, I mostly relaxed!
