Finding Grace #441

You may have seen the acronym GRACE as God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. Grace is also God’s unmerited favor, or God doing for us what we cannot.

I find grace overflowing with God’s love, joy, peace, blessings, mercy, power, provision, protection, and wisdom. Thank You, Jesus!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This was a good week. I enjoyed my birthday on Monday, and we returned home from Medora. Thanks for all the birthday wishes!

On Monday, I went to the chiropractor again. My hip is still bothering me, but I don’t think it is a new injury; rather, I think it’s just from daily life building up over time. I found an online deep stretching program I will try in addition to the other things I do. After only three days, I still have pain, but I am noticing a difference in mobility!

At work, I had a full schedule but also fit in six additional patients! It will take some time to catch up with charting, but that’s okay. Two fun things happened, though. We celebrated my birthday with chocolate cake on Tuesday. Also, a coworker and I went for a walk when it started to pour, so we had to jog back to the office. We were drenched but laughing. A fun memory for sure!

On Wednesday, I was involved with a very minor fender bender with a state vehicle! I was behind the car at a stop light and rolled into it when my foot accidentally came off my brake. It could have been because I was sitting funny related to my hip. My back was a little sore, but my car is totally fine. I called the police to file a report, and I got a simple warning for “following too close.”  It was definitely my fault, and I am grateful there were no major issues with the other driver. He was very understanding!

Yesterday after work, I met a widow friend for lunch at a newer little French bistro in town. We had fancy coffee and a delicious meal, along with great conversation. I took home a couple of giant croissants to share with Lydia. 😀 Then, in the evening, we met some old friends, Owen and Krystal, who were in town visiting. They now live in Colorado with their four kids, but they were a huge part of our support system when Dave was sick (as mentioned in my book). It was fun to see them!

Today, I was on-call for work. I had to go in for two patients, but they were fairly easy. Later, I spent time with Lydia, roasted some veggies, took a nap, and made phone calls.

Making Memories In Medora

This past weekend, Lydia and I headed west to celebrate my birthday! We didn’t have much of a plan, but that was okay with us! I have learned that sometimes the best things happen when we just go with the flow and let God surprise us.

On Friday, we took our time and enjoyed our drive. We stopped to see the world’s largest bison in Jamestown, the world’s largest Holstein cow in New Salem, and the world’s largest scrap metal sculptures along the Enchanted Highway! We also had fun looking for different types of birds!

We stayed in Dickinson, ND, which is about half an hour east of Medora and then drove in on Saturday. We decided to spend all day there and maximize our time. So, we shopped a bit, ate some good foods, walked all over the place, visited Theodore Roosevelt National Park, hiked a bit, and attended the Medora Musical! We had a great time!

According to a 2024 estimate, the town of Medora has a population of about 165 people, so most of the people we saw were tourists! I was surprised at how little traffic there was. Most people parked and then walked everywhere, as the town is small and quaint. On Saturday, I got 21,000 steps!

On Sunday, we decided to relax at our hotel in Dickinson. We slept in, enjoyed a lazy breakfast, swam, and relaxed in the hot tub. It was the perfect way to relax! Later, we enjoyed a salad bar and Zoomed with our family.

As usual, our time together was well-timed. I was so glad to spend time with Lydia before school starts next week. We bonded, joked around, and even had some serious conversations. Lydia truly enjoyed hiking, which made me so proud. I know our relationship will continue to change over the coming years, so this time together was a gift!

Ultimately, I am grateful God has given me another year of life. I have reflected on all the ways He has blessed me, and I am still counting. His grace is abundant, and I can never fully grasp all He has done for me.

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This week was busy because we were trying to get a lot done before heading out on a birthday adventure. We had to get a few chores done early, pack, etc., in order to be gone for a few days. It was all worth it, of course!

Work was full, and I had a lot of paperwork. It all turned out well, but I added a few patients to my already full schedule. The fun part was that we celebrated a coworker’s upcoming wedding and met and another coworker’s two-month-old baby!

On Monday, I went to the chiropractor, and I am so glad I did. My back needed adjusting, but my hip was even worse. It has been locked up for a couple of months! It was sore afterward for a few days, but hopefully, it is on the mend now. Otherwise, I will have to check in for another adjustment next week.

This week, I saw a lot of cool birds! First, I saw a young red-tailed hawk on my deck! I was so surprised I didn’t get a picture, even when it came back and peered in my window! On a different day, I saw a bald eagle flying over the highway on my way to work. I also saw two (and later four) cute pigeons on the windowsill at work. Certainly not as exciting as a hawk and eagle, but they still made me smile! 🙂

Yesterday, after work, Lydia and I drove out west to Dickinson, ND. We drove on the Enchanted Highway and saw several gigantic scrap metal sculptures! We also saw many birds we don’t see often in Fargo since there are more people!

Today, we are visiting Medora, a little further down the road. I haven’t been since I was pregnant with Lydia! We will drive through Teddy Roosevelt National Park and see the Medora Musical tonight. The rest will be an adventure, but it will be fun to see what God has in store for us!

Finding Grace #403

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This was a fun week with so much packed in that it seemed longer than usual! 🙂

On Monday, I went to visit two Veterans in long-term care facilities. One of the places, I used to fill in when I worked on-call as a dietitian (one of my first Fargo jobs). It’s been about eleven years since I was there, and it brought back some good memories. 

Tuesday was Lydia’s birthday, so we spent the evening celebrating. We ordered some burgers and fries from Five Guys, then went home to watch Elf and open presents. She received several gifts in the mail, so she had about four days of birthday fun!

For Thanksgiving, we stayed home and put our own spin on some of our favorites. We made potatoes, cranberry sauce, and turkey meatballs. Lydia put together some fancy drinks, and then we enjoyed some pumpkin pie. It was a relaxing day together, and we enjoyed watching a movie and playing a game, too!

I also heard from my African friends on Thursday. They reminded me that last year, I introduced them to pumpkin pie. They thanked me for being their guide when they first came to Faro. It was so cool they thought of me and called to say that!

Today, some of Lydia’s friends from school came over for a little party. They did some painting and had some treats. Lydia had fun opening presents, I enjoyed all the laughter!

The weather was great again this week! It is getting chilly, but every day or week without snow makes me feel like winter might not last so long. I’m sure it will be here soon, though!

Garage Door Tune-Up

Happy Thanksgiving! This has been a busy week already! Maybe you feel the same way?!

On Monday morning, I made a list of everything I needed to do after coming home from work. I felt a little overwhelmed, mostly because I didn’t want to forget anything! I prayed for God’s help as I went about my day!

First, I needed to finish wrapping some presents for Lydia’s birthday (on Tuesday). I also wanted to work on this post early so I could focus on her special day. She wanted to enjoy a nice meal and watch a movie. I didn’t want her to feel rushed.

And, of course, it happens to be a holiday week! Lydia and I plan to make a few simple dishes tomorrow. I’m looking forward to a fun day together, but there’s a lot to do before then.

Finally, about a month ago, I wrote that my garage door needed a rubber weather stripping replaced (see picture below). The special order piece took a while to arrive, and on Monday evening, my neighbor came over to help me install it! He works for a garage door company, so together, we were able to install it quickly.

As we tested the door, my neighbor saw a sliver of light shining through, which meant the door was not coming down all the way. I had noticed this over the last month but had forgotten to mention it earlier. My neighbor climbed his small ladder and opened the garage door motor. I handed him a few small tools, and he adjusted the mechanism until the door shut correctly.

By then, he offered to change the lightbulb in the garage motor unit. While up there, he noticed the garage door chain was a little loose. So, naturally, he wanted to tighten that up!

I was so grateful as I watched my neighbor tune-up my garage door. Not only did he help with the original issue, but he was thorough in looking at the entire door. He didn’t stop just when it was convenient. He stayed and did a complete job.

Surprisingly, it feels like I have a new garage door! I can already tell the garage is warmer and quieter, and this year, I should avoid getting snow under my garage door.

That reminds me of God’s grace and provision. I had been waiting patiently for weeks, rescheduling a few times because the piece wasn’t in. I had hoped the chore would be done earlier so I wouldn’t be jammed as this week got closer. I specifically tried to plan ahead! Yet, it seems God used this very thing to slow me down and notice His blessings in a big way.

First, I really appreciated God gave me a good blog topic a whole day early! It was so cool that He perfectly orchestrated my week. God is so gracious and fixed my door, but He also went above and beyond by addressing things I didn’t even know were wrong!

And because of all that, I was able to be fully present with Lydia on her birthday. She is now twelve and was counting down her birthday for months. Lydia is such a treasure to me, and I didn’t want to be distracted by house tasks or my blog. As a single mom, my time is sometimes divided, and I never want to give her less than she deserves!

While these things are important to me, my sweet girl comes first! Lydia would not quite understand my potential dilemma, so I didn’t burden her with it. I’m just grateful I didn’t have to choose – God made it easy for me!

More Meaningful Multicultural Moments

“Mom, this is another letter that starts, “Greetings from Paul!'” Lydia said. I had to laugh a bit, as she’s been reading a lot of the Bible’s New Testament lately. The Apostle Paul did write quite a bit of it, namely in letters to believers in various cities. He interacted with several different cultures all over the Mediterranean region!

I was still thinking about this Saturday night when we attended a birthday party for an African boy in Lydia’s grade. These are the immigrants we met last year at the bus stop – and the very first thing I asked them was if they had snow gear!

In full disclosure, I was so happy to be invited, but I wasn’t quite up for going. It had been a long day with a delivery, phone calls, laundry, and feeling crummy from my flu shot the day before (for work). I was tired.

Nonetheless, we wrapped up a couple of LEGO kits and decided to go for a little while before returning home. However, I knew leaving early could be a bit of a challenge because of certain cultural differences regarding time.

You see, I am prompt and hate to be late… but sometimes others consider time differently. The invitation said 5:30 p.m., but the mother told me to come “anytime after 6 p.m.” So, we decided to go right around 6 o’clock and were the third family to arrive.

The younger brother (fifth grade) started to answer the door, but he ran away before opening it to tell everyone, “Lydia came, Lydia came!!” Then, the younger sister (third grade) came and peeked out the window as well. She also squealed and ran to get her dad, who thankfully opened the door. Seeing their excitement, immediately, I was glad we came.

They gave us a tour of their new house, having moved from a small apartment a few weeks before. My friend and some other ladies warmly greeted us as they made fried rice. Many of these people also work in healthcare – highly qualified doctors, nurses, and CNAs. Some of them are immigrants, as well.

Within a few minutes of arriving, I smelled the delicious food and forgot I hadn’t felt well for much of the day. I decided to stay awhile, especially when my friend introduced me as his “first friend here in Fargo who welcomed his family.”

Later, I ate some goat meat stew, jollof rice, as well as seasoned beef and chicken. I chatted with a high school student who happens to play the viola. I’ll be sure to look for her when she and Lydia’s schools have a combined concert in November.

This girl’s mom took a while to warm up to me. She questioned if I had ever had African food before (yes, I have!) and made some other comments. Perhaps she felt like I was invading her cultural safe zone. I did not take offense, as it’s likely she’s experienced much more discrimination than me. Thankfully, we soon bonded over some drinks, and by the end, she offered to share her food with me. 

Two hours later, we finally decided to go. I thanked my friends and hugged them goodbye. I waved to everyone else, and they all seemed grateful we came. It was a fun night, and I carried the weight (impact) of it home with me!

The next morning, I received a text from the family thanking us for coming. They were “especially surprised” that we stayed the whole time. 🙂 I’m so glad I decided to stay.

I’m sure the Apostle Paul felt like this sometimes. Looking for commonalities with people who were so different. Having awkward conversations at times and some misunderstandings. Hitting roadblocks but bonding over food and faith. Bringing the Good News of Jesus to everyone he met. These nuances require compassion, wisdom, and persistence.

Isn’t God good?! I love how we can always lean on Jesus. When He is present, nothing else matters as much. Not only are we His ambassadors, we can become brothers and sisters in Christ! All around the world, His love changes lives… and we are conduits of His grace.

God, thanks for all the ways You love us. Thanks for creating so many different types of people. And thanks for opening up a way for people all over the world to know You, through Jesus. Help us bring Your light everywhere we go. In Jesus’ Name, Amen

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This was a full week, but good all around! Sometimes, this season can feel overwhelming, but by God’s grace, I am enjoying all the busyness this year. I think it’s because we are connecting with new and old friends and have a lot of fun things to look forward to! I am relishing it all and focusing on keeping a quiet heart.

On Monday, I was invited to coffee by a friend and fellow VA employee. Our girls are friends, and the two of us talked for about two hours! It was fun catching up and a refreshing way to spend our day off (Columbus Day).

There were school conferences on Tuesday. We took the opportunity to practice opening Lydia’s locker and also attended the book fair! We also ran into several neighbors and friends, which was a great surprise!

Work was busy, but I stayed on top of charting. I had three patients who had good breakthroughs after many months of struggling. It’s so gratifying to see them succeed! I also had some meetings for the two upcoming maternity leaves. I think it will be challenging but also a good chance to grow professionally. I know God will be with me!

This morning, I received a special delivery. I had looked around for an older fridge/freezer to put in the garage, but I had not found anything that seemed reliable. Then, I found a new one on sale and made the purchase. I have been thinking about it for several months, but it will be good to separate some of our items so we can actually see what we have. It will also be helpful when we have excess leftovers, company, or need to plan ahead for holidays.

Today, two of Lydia’s friends have birthdays! Last night, she went to an escape room with some of her girlfriends to celebrate. And tonight, we are going to a birthday/ housewarming party for our African friends (remember them?!). They are doing well, and I am really happy for them!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This week was ‘business as usual’ and relatively calm! Lydia had a great week at school and even walked to Starbucks a little down the road with her friends afterward. She earned some money from babysitting and mowing, so it was fun for her to get a treat.

 I had a ton of patients this week at work, and they ALL came. Often, I have a few no-shows or cancellations so I have more time to get caught up. I stayed a few hours extra on Friday afternoon to finish all my charting! I am grateful for an understanding boss.

Work was stressful enough that I didn’t take much of lunch break one day. Ninety-nine percent of my day was with patients. I ate quickly between patients and still got interrupted.  I was exhausted mentally. As a result, I later had some gut issues and felt depleted the next day. I decided to take a rest day, which was the best thing I could have done. I had another full day of work and other activities but did not do any extra chores or exercise. Instead, I went to bed early! I was proud of myself for listening to my body. The next day, I felt much better!

The picture above is of the blue supermoon this week. It was taken by my very talented brother, Patrick, who currently lives in Phoenix. I asked him if I could share it with you all, and he happily agreed. I took a photo, as well, but he has a lot more skills than me. 😉

Today, Lydia and I celebrated the first birthday of a sweet little girl. Her mom is a dear friend, and we had fun catching up with some familiar faces and meeting more of the extended family. It was so cute watching her try to open presents and eat her smash cake!

Finding Grace #388

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This was a fun week, partly because it was all leading up to my birthday TODAY!!

Work went well, and I enjoyed a lighter patient load. There were a few little surprises, but one good thing is that my patient with a complicated case has been improving quite a bit. He called me with good news, and I was so happy his condition is stable, and he is eating more.

Lydia and I went to check out some more sunflower fields. They are so pretty en masse! We got some fun pictures and enjoyed seeing more of the North Dakota countryside!

On Friday, I met a friend for lunch after work. We had a good two-hour conversation about all God has been doing in our lives. This friend has been through a lot but continues to challenge herself and grow in faith. It’s encouraging to me, and I always enjoy hanging out with her!

After that, Lydia and I got a head start on celebrating my birthday! We went to see those sunflowers, then followed it up with dinner at a Lebanese restaurant. The food was so delicious and such a treat. We shared several dishes and had baklava for dessert. Then, we took a walk around our neighborhood and the middle school!

Today, I woke up early and enjoyed some espresso and quiet time. I made a full breakfast with eggs, toast, fruit, and veggies. Then, when Lydia woke up, we went on a bike ride. The weather was perfect with bright blue skies and just a slight breeze!

After that, I did a little weeding – because I wanted to!! I also updated some hardware on my little free libraries. I did NOT feel like mowing on my birthday, though! So, that will have to wait. 😉

Later, I caught up with several birthday shout-outs online and a number of texts and phone calls. I really appreciate everyone cheering me on and reaching out. Also, thanks to all of you who faithfully read my blog each week!

Tonight, we are enjoying some homemade cherry dump cake, watching a movie, and playing Qwirkle. If we can stay up late enough, we hope to go see the Perseid meteor shower. It comes every year around my birthday, but I always seem to miss it. Occasionally, it’s due to the weather, but most of the time, I have to work or be somewhere the next day. So, hopefully, it works out tonight since it’s supposed to clear. It would be the best ending to a wonderful birthday!

Finding Grace #354

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This week was a little unpredictable but good! Mostly it was all related to the weather. We had snow from Tuesday night through today!

The schools were closed and had virtual learning Wednesday and Thursday, and then started two hours late on Friday, so people had time to clear the snow. Of course, this altered my work schedule. I decided to go in for a few hours but also needed to balance everything with Lydia. Thankfully, my boss is understanding – and everyone else was in the same situation! It all turned out well enough!

The snow itself was quite pretty and really was ideal considering how it could have been. I was grateful for a timely reminder from the Lord that I am not alone. My snow service took care of most of the driveway and sidewalks. I just cleared the parts closest to the house.

With the weather, my chiropractor moved up my appointment to Thursday morning instead of the evening. The timing was good since I hadn’t left for work. She mentioned her four-year-old daughter is into Belle from “Beauty & the Beast”. Well, Lydia voluntarily offered her a gently used blanket she hasn’t used in a few years. It has both Belle and the Beast on it, so the little girl will surely enjoy it! We washed it, so it was ready to go. It feels good knowing it is going to a good home!!

On Friday, Lydia and I each had eye doctor appointments. It has been four years since my Lasik surgery and everything looks well! Lydia’s vision has gotten a little worse, so she will need to get new lenses for a new prescription. But, overall things look good!

Today, we celebrated Dave’s 44th birthday, his tenth in Heaven. We love and miss him still. But, we are grateful for how good and faithful God has been to us! We made brownies, played a rousing game of Monopoly, and are now watching Home Alone. It’s been a sweet day remembering Dave.
