Finding Grace #145

I love giving God a shout out for what He has done. We don’t do that nearly enough!

You may have seen the acronym GRACE as God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. Grace is also God’s unmerited favor, or God doing for us what we cannot.

I find grace overflowing with God’s love, joy, peace, blessings, mercy, power, provision, protection, and wisdom. Thank You, Jesus!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?

This was a really exciting week. To start, everything was fairly normal, though I worked an extra day to get ahead for the holidays. Lydia has some time off around Christmas, so I will want to spend time with her.

Now for one exciting part: I got Lasik eye surgery yesterday! Of course, I have to rest and be somewhat cautious in the days ahead but this is really good for me. My double astigmatism is now corrected. My ‘toric’ contact lenses were pricey and my glasses were 10+ years old. Indeed, the costs do add up when considering time factors, eye doctor appointments, and the cost of supplies. I’m glad I didn’t let fear get in the way!

One big help, and another exciting part of this week, is that my mother-in-law came to visit! She treated us with tickets to the Nutcracker ballet today (a local production of the show). Thankfully, it was dark and my eyes adjusted well to the stage lights. But, the timing also worked well for her to take me to my surgery appointment and follow-ups, and she is able to help keep Lydia occupied while I rest my eyes (literally!).

Finally, Lydia also had a big week. She went to the orthodontist and received an expander for her teeth! In the future, she will need braces. I’d appreciate prayers for the next few weeks as she adjusts and I help her with the expander. I never had braces or anything similar, so this is all new for both of us. Many thanks!

Well, I’m going to keep this short as I don’t want to strain my vision. It was advised to limit or avoid time online, on my phone, watching television, etc. In fact, I wrote most of this post ahead of time (before my surgery) so I could just make minor revisions today. Praise God for awesome technology!

I’m grateful for how God always directs our path and blesses us. He is so good!

Win-Win!!

Sometimes, Life lessons are set into motion long before we need them…

Last year, my mom bought Lydia a pretty new winter coat. The pattern has navy blue and peach hearts with a pair of peach-colored snow pants. Lydia liked it last year, but it was too big.

She continued to wear her old winter coat until this week when we realized she had grown out of it and made the swap. Lydia’s new coat is still slightly big, but it will work well for her. I’m grateful my mom found a deal!

The old blue coat has a huge hole in one pocket and a couple holes elsewhere. The sleeves are also too short and have seen better days. Instead of giving the old coat away, I decided to toss it.

Then, to my surprise, Lydia was absurdly thrilled about getting rid of the coat! She started talking about how bad the old coat had become, how she didn’t even like it anymore, and how she was happy to be “done” with it.

This struck me because I knew how much she loved the coat originally. It was a huge blessing when she received it. So naturally, I turned it into a teaching moment. 🙂

I said, “Lydia, don’t forget that old coat served you well. I bought it for you and it kept you warm for two winters! It was a gift you really needed. Don’t you ever hold an old blessing in contempt because you got a new one…”

I didn’t want Lydia to take it for granted or to miss the point. So, I grabbed the coat out of the garbage and decided Lydia could use it for her outdoor play coat. Thankfully, she agreed with me because she plays outside regularly and this will also preserve the new coat. Win-win!

Winter coats are just one example, but I wonder how many times I do the same thing.

It’s certainly good to look forward to upcoming opportunities. In Life, growth is vital, and we will inevitably grow out of some things and into others. At the same time, it seems careless to ditch the old so we can grab the new. We need to find balance.

The difference is gratitude.

When God blesses me with something new, wonderful! Chances are good I will be expecting it based on how He has already prepared me. What a gift!

But, if I am discontent and just searching for what is new, bright or shiny, I risk leaving behind all the lessons I learned… On my own, I will miss the point.

Let’s not despise what God has already done for us. His blessings—both old and new—are just as abundant as His grace. Let’s be grateful for how God has lead us thus far and trust Him as we move forward! Another win-win!

Florida Fun

Last night, Lydia and I returned from Jacksonville, Florida, where we visited my parents over Thanksgiving break. Additionally, my sister and brother-in-law flew in from Chicago to be with us. We all had a great time together!

Lydia didn’t mind missing two days of school (one day of traveling each way). We celebrated her birthday, and made lots of new memories!

This past week, we fit in many fun activities. One evening, we went to ‘Catty Shack’ (a wildlife sanctuary) and saw lions, tigers, panthers and more. These animals were rescued or ‘retired’ from other places. They’re still considered wild though they all were born in captivity. We attended a ‘night feeding’ and saw massive tigers only a few feet away!

After lunch on Thanksgiving, we went to the beach at St. Augustine. We also saw The Castillo de San Marcos, which is the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. The Spanish started building it in 1672. My dad and Lydia also rode on a little carousel. Later, we toured the downtown area. It was fun to see Christmas lights covering palm trees!

During our stay, we went to three different beaches! We saw the Atlantic Ocean in St. Augustine, Jacksonville, and Daytona. Lydia, especially, had so much fun. She shrieked with delight as we waded in the waves. Each day, the weather and waves were unique.

It was amazing to see God’s handiwork. Whether the waves were calm or roaring, they were mesmerizing and reminded me of His creative power, beauty, and love! What an awesome God He is! Sometimes His love is soothing and sometimes it is wildly fierce.

On Saturday, we went downtown to the annual holiday light boat parade. We sat right next to the water, across from Jacksonville Landing and the blue Main Street Bridge. We saw approximately sixty boats decorated with everything from nativity sets, Santa Claus, hula girls, snowmen, and alligators. It was unlike anything I’d ever seen!

The boat parade took place on the St. Johns River, which happens to be Florida’s longest river at 310 miles long. To top it off, we watched fireworks from two barges, and also fireworks that cascaded off two bridges like a waterfall!

On Monday, we drove an hour and a half down to Daytona. My mom showed us around and we even drove past the birthplace of NASCAR and the Daytona 500! Then, we met up with a dear friend, Jody, for a fun afternoon. We ate lunch on the shore of the Halifax River (a part of the intercoastal waterway) and fed some birds. Next, we went to Daytona beach and walked on some large rocks jutting out into the ocean. Then we enjoyed ice cream at a specialty store, Zeno’s, which is a local favorite. Yum!

Sometimes I get nervous about the travel details, especially when flying. I pray my luggage doesn’t get lost and that our flights go smoothly. Well, once again, I felt God’s grace because on Sunday, the blizzard that hit much of the Midwest avoided Fargo and Minneapolis. Even yesterday, some flights to other areas were not running. But thankfully, we had perfect weather and no issues. Praise God!

When I booked our flights months ago, I prayerfully chose what worked best for us. I would not have guessed a blizzard would hit during our trip, yet God graciously protected us from the brunt of it. Yesterday’s three flights arrived early each time!

I always enjoy seeing God at work around me. On our first flight yesterday, I was able to encourage an older lady who had just lost her husband. She spent her first Thanksgiving as a widow, after 60 years of marriage, and was now returning to Atlanta. I told her I understood how difficult the holidays can be and was able to share a little of my story with her. She said she had been feeling sorry for herself, but was grateful for my perspective.

This trip was just what we needed. I’m sure we’ll have to plan another one soon because there is still so much we didn’t do! Special thanks to our friends who drove us to and from the airport… and watched over our house while we were gone.

Now, it’s back to our normal routine…

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?

This week was full of celebrating Lydia’s birthday and Thanksgiving with family. It is always good to be with family!

We tried many new things and made good memories. We went to a big cat sanctuary and watched a holiday boat parade on the St John’s River. So cool!

I’m thankful my family has always been flexible with holiday traditions. Some years we do the works and in recent years we’ve gone out to eat. Often, we have extra people present: friends, coworkers, or people with nowhere else to go. The best part is to be together and enjoy God’s goodness.

A Birthday Bonus

This week, we are celebrating Lydia’s birthday and Thanksgiving! BONUS!! For me, it is no coincidence that Lydia was born the week of Thanksgiving.

Lydia is surely my greatest blessing. She constantly keeps me moving forward as I want to be my best for her. I am forever grateful God gave me her!

Over the last several years, I have learned many lessons just by being a parent. One of the biggest things I have seen lately is the importance of child-like faith.

Lydia has many questions about God and life in general. She eagerly seeks answers, but is always quick to give the benefit of the doubt.

While she does not understand ‘everything’ just yet, Lydia acknowledges that the issue is on her end, not God’s. She realizes that the answers probably exist, she simply has not found them yet…

That doesn’t stop her from reading, asking, and learning all she can! Trust me, she is quite persistent!

Lydia helps me find joy in the present. Children don’t dwell on the past for long. Mistakes are easily forgotten and grace is readily accepted! Seeing Lydia forgive herself helps me remember to do the same.

Similarly, Lydia is always looking forward to whatever is coming next. In her excitement for the future, Lydia shows simple faith and pure hope in what God can do. She doesn’t let troubles phase her. She just trusts that God can take care of it.

Naturally, it’s not always peachy-keen around our house. We certainly have tense moments and meltdowns (both of us!).

But even then, I can be grateful. God has led us this far and He is not done with us yet! It’s an honor and privilege to work with God in shaping Lydia’s young life. I love who she is becoming!

Happy Birthday, Lydia! Many happy returns of the day… I love you!!

Finding Grace #137

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?

This week went well and was full of God’s grace. On Monday, I ran some errands and went to the eye doctor. It was a beautiful day, and I wanted to get ahead for the rest of the busy week. Lydia and I also went to my writers group, which meets once a month.

On Tuesday, we went to parent-teacher conferences after school. I’m grateful Lydia is doing so well. She was happy to show me around her room and give me a little tour of her school! We also donated some snacks, games, and puzzles to share with her class. I’m glad to be able to encourage Lydia and her friends to learn all they can.

On Wednesday evening we went to church for JBQ. It was fun to see how much progress my little group has made. It’s so important for them to get God’s word down in their hearts, and I am grateful to be a part of that process.

On Thursday and Friday, Lydia was off from school. First, we did housework and prepared for friends to come over. To my great surprise, without being asked, Lydia started cleaning the kitchen cabinets with a little toothbrush! Then, I surprised Lydia by taking her to get her ears pierced. She was so excited because she has been requesting this for a while. It’s fun to see her growing up!

Today, we had a relaxing day at home and enjoyed the beautiful weather!

All In

 Lately, I have been seeing two words or concepts which keep popping up in daily life: sacrifice and investment. So, I started thinking about the relationship between the two.

Sacrifice implies a loss or even a disadvantage. Investments require a temporary cost now to gain something better later. With investments, there may even be interest!

Now, I usually don’t prefer to do things half-way. I’m either all in or all out. In certain situations, I realize compromise is important. But to me, if anything is worth doing, it’s worth doing well.

Interestingly, it seems most worthwhile goals take a fair amount of time, effort, and/or money. So perhaps you can’t really have a quality investment without some level of sacrifice. Hmmm…

At times, even small things can feel like big sacrifices. Eating well, exercising, and getting adequate rest are examples. But, these are also investments in our health. When that mental switch occurs between sacrifice and investment, my attitude instantly improves! The challenges don’t seem so difficult. The momentary struggle is worth it!

Similarly, in late September, my local school district voted on a referendum for new schools, upgrades to security, and more. For me, it was a no-brainer. Our school district is growing rapidly and needs to make some adjustments.

I’m thankful the referendum passed, but I understand that some people feel differently. It may be a large sacrifice for them. Or, perhaps they have different priorities than me. That’s okay!

My additional annual cost will be somewhere around the cost of a nice pair of shoes. Now, for me, that’s not a big deal. Ultimately, it is an investment in my community and my child.

In a few short years, Lydia will be in a school that is currently overcrowded. The referendum money will help alleviate that issue. It’s worth it…so I’m all in.

A strong marriage also requires a lot of hard work. My neighbors recently celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary. Ten years ago, they planted an apple tree, and this year, they were finally able to harvest enough fruit to make it worthwhile!

They spent a lot of time this past weekend making pies, applesauce, dehydrated apples, etc. Lydia and I even received some delicious homemade “anniversary apple crisp” from their bounty. Their original investment has overflowed to bless us too!

Similarly, parenting is one investment that requires many sacrifices. I’m already starting to see some great things in Lydia. But overall, it will take another 10-20 (30?!) years to see the full impact of all I invest in her. Lord, help me do my best!

I want to be wise with my resources and be a good steward. Still, Lydia is worth every bit of my time, effort/energy, and money. That’s the nature of parenting.

In the same way, spiritual disciplines are also important. Spending time with Jesus is an investment with eternal rewards! That said, we are as close to Him as we want to be.

The more we pray and get to know Jesus, the greater confidence we have that He loves us and is for us. And, the more time we spend reading and memorizing Scripture, the more it flourishes in our hearts.

When we go through tough seasons, we can sacrifice our self-pity and lay down our fear, choosing to praise the Lord despite our troubles. Through worship, we can experience more joy, peace, grace, and blessing.

Jesus paid the ultimate sacrifice with His life on the Cross. Then, He gave us the Holy Spirit as a guarantee for what is to come—and to help us live a life full of Victory!

Jesus’ commitment to us shows us just how valuable we are to Him. He gave up everything to rescue us and to prove His love for us. He’s all in!

We can never out-give God—our sacrifices will never measure up—but we can be grateful for all He has done for us! His investment in us continues to grow! Praise God!

Finding Grace #133

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?

This was a good week, full of fun events. On Sunday, a pastor I know from Illinois visited; he knows my parents too. He gave me a shout out from the pulpit. It was fun to connect with him after the service. It’s a small world!

On Tuesday, I left work late and missed picking up Lydia from the bus. I texted my neighbor, Melissa, who was able to take Lydia home. When I arrived a few minutes later, she asked if Lydia could stay and play. During that time, I was able to complete a few chores and my Wednesday blog post. Then, she fed us both dinner and dessert! I’m grateful for Melissa’s generosity and God’s provision! Thank you! 🙂

Lydia worked really hard, read and studied all her JBQ questions. She was able to answer all the questions correctly and moved on to the next booklet. I enjoyed leading her group and am impressed by how many kids are memorizing God’s word. What a blessing!

I had my “Facing Fear, Finding Faith” Bible study on Thursday. I’m really grateful for the opportunity to lead the group. Going through this with others helps me, too. I’m glad we don’t have to be afraid!

Today, Lydia and I went with our friend, Sara, to a local ‘junk market’ at the fairgrounds, which as you may guess has antiques, upcycled items, jewelry, specialty foods, as well as new house decor. All afternoon, we had so much fun perusing the market! It’s a fun tradition! I bought a few fun magnets for my refrigerator and a couple of pictures.

We’ve had beautiful weather this week, but, it is starting to get cooler. I’ve noticed fewer Monarch butterflies day-by-day…and the Canada geese also are starting to head south. The trees are also starting to change colors. The autumn is a short season, but it is so lovely! 🙂

Counting Every Blessing

It’s that time of year again! Lydia started school this week! She has been so excited for about a month. She could hardly sleep on Monday night… Tuesday, she started a new school and was happy to see her friends.

I’m proud of Lydia for all the ways she’s already grown. She’s been challenging herself to try new things and be more independent. Her dad, my late-husband, Dave, would also be so very proud.

I have been purposely relying on the Lord as we start this new season. As such, I haven’t really thought much about the bittersweet nature of our circumstances. Still, this week is one of those times when it is apparent: Dave’s not here.

Lydia’s teacher seems really sweet. She’s a first-year teacher and full of excitement, too. When we met her, I didn’t want to burst her bubble… so, I simply wrote her a short explanation about Dave on Lydia’s back to school papers.

Yesterday, after Lydia got off the bus, we went home and talked about her day over a scoop of ice cream. She had a fun day, of course, and I know she will have a great year.

To my surprise, Lydia said she was glad I didn’t mention Dave to her teacher in person. Specifically, she said, “I’m glad you didn’t cry like you did last year.”  (and the year before…) I might have embarrassed her previously!

Truthfully, I’m happy Lydia seems unaffected, but it makes me slightly sad. I have tried to ensure that she knows who Dave was and that he loved her very much. I want her to be able to talk about him whenever she feels the need. I want her to be okay with it.

But instead of feeling sorry for myself (and Lydia), I decided to count my blessings!

First, I’m grateful for Lydia! She’s always a bright spot and has kept me moving forward. I love to coach her and watch her grow. I don’t know where I’d be without her!

I’m grateful Lydia and I can have honest, heartfelt conversations about tough topics. We have had many ups and downs, which has made it interesting!

I’m also grateful Lydia is so much like Dave. She doesn’t overthink things like I do! She is pragmatic like Dave and has a good perspective. Though, she is like me in lots of other ways.

I’m grateful for how well Dave set us up. Because of his planning and God’s provision, Lydia and I are in a good position. I have no reason to complain!

I’m extremely grateful that each year, we’ve reached new levels of healing. We think of and talk about Dave often, but we are still living a full life in spite of our loss(es).

I’m grateful for so many things, actually. But most of all, I’m grateful that God’s still holding us together. He has brought us this far and we are doing well.

I can trust Him with confidence. He’s got this!

Finding Grace #129

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?

This was another great week filled with God’s grace! My mother in law stayed until Tuesday morning. We always enjoy showing her around town and doing fun activities that we normally forget about! She watched Lydia for me during a meeting on Monday night.

A coworker shared some peaches with me at work, which was an extra blessing to me. The peaches were part of a local fundraiser, but I didn’t get a chance to buy any this season. So, the peaches felt like a personalized gift from God!

We met Lydia’s teacher for this upcoming school year. She seems really nice and Lydia likes her. This is her first year of teaching, and Lydia is excited to have fun learning!

I had some great conversation with friends this week, including one friend who we met for coffee (today). We spent about two hours chatting and catching up. This friend is a bright spot in my life and it was encouraging to hear what God is doing in her life.

This evening, Lydia and I took a bike ride to the splash pad in our neighborhood. We ate a picnic there and then rode back after she was done playing. Then, I weeded a couple areas of my yard while she read some books and played with friends.

It’s been a great week! Thank You, Jesus!!
