Landscaping and God’s Love

For the last twelve-plus years since Dave died, I have been thinking about my landscaping. Yes, that’s practically forever! I’ve known I needed to do something, but I wasn’t entirely sure what to do. So, I did nothing.

I wasn’t being lazy; I was at an impasse. Part of me realized that once I make a decision, there’s no real going back if I don’t like it. However, on some level, it was overwhelming to make decisions on my own. Dave was so good at the outdoor projects!

Then, two years ago, my parents visited, and I took notes when Dad provided me with ideas and exact details. Nothing fancy, just adding soil around the foundation, as well as river rock and a border. That was awesome, but I just didn’t know where to start or who to call. So, I forgot about it.

Finally, this summer, I requested a quote from a local company, but the timing was delayed since summer is their busiest time of the year.

On Monday, I heard they would be coming that day. I was eager to get it done, but I had to be at work before they came. Initially, I thought the foreman would come and outline where everything would go. But I decided not to worry about it.

I got home that night and was impressed by how much had already been done. The three men said they would return the next day to complete the task. I noticed one area of concern, but did not mention it. Instead, I thanked them before heading out to an evening activity. It’s been a packed week!

Then, yesterday morning, upon review, I still felt the border layout was too close to the deck. It could become a tripping hazard around the stairs, but it also didn’t look quite right to me. Yet, the work was done well, and exactly according to the quote. I wasn’t sure if I should say anything or just live with it.

I briefly texted with my family, and they encouraged me to speak up, so I had no regrets. I worked with the foreman to resolve the issue. We decided to extend the border by another foot or so on two sides to match it all the way around.

I apologized that it would take more effort to undo and redo the line, but the foreman was gracious. They even offered to add two flat stones to make a landing spot off the stairs, and I agreed. I was at work this whole time, so I had to trust them!

After work, I went to check it out. I LOVED the final result! I could not be happier with how it turned out! It’s exactly what I wanted and how I imagined it. I texted the foreman to express my gratitude and sent pictures to my family.

I am in awe of how the project turned out, and even more so, of how good God is. He stretched me and gave me the courage to say what I needed. He provided the overall plan through my dad and the foreman, and the money for the work to be done. I am both relieved and joyful about the final result!

It took me a long time to reach this point, but I am also praising God for bringing me this far. He is so faithful, and this is one more way He pressed me to keep moving forward. When I look at my landscaping now, I will think of His gracious love for me and His good plan for my life!

Lord, thanks for giving me the courage to follow through and speak up when needed. Thanks for all the ways You challenge me and provide for me. Help me honor You in all I do. In Jesus’ Name, Amen

Power = Strength + Speed

As a Registered Dietitian, I am required to complete a certain amount of continuing education each year. There are lots of ways to accomplish this, and I often buy a book and test worth a lot of credits all at once.

I’m currently working on a course and book titled “Hold Onto Your Muscle!” by Robert Iafelice, who is also a dietitian. The content is really good so far, and I am able to use the information in my work.

It has taken me months to get through the book because I am being reminded of fascinating things I already learned, or looking up new things I am questioning. Additionally, I am filling out the test as I go, so it takes a little time to read and make sure I understand what is being said and that my answers are correct.

Sometimes I visit the local bookstore to enjoy a cup of coffee while going through the material. I also did this when writing my book, because it is quiet and helps me stay in one spot (so nothing gets disturbed) without feeling like I need to clean or do chores at home.

Recently, I was in chapter eight and came across the ‘equation’ that power = strength + speed. Now, in context, this was important. But, immediately, I thought about God’s Power. I envisioned His strength and His speed in helping us.

God’s power is renowned in the Bible and throughout history, in various capacities around the world. Jesus and the Holy Spirit are included in how this manifests through us. But God doesn’t really need help from people; He likes to include us!

In Nehemiah 8:10, we read that the joy of the Lord is our strength. We find our rest in Him and all He has done for us. We don’t fight for Victory, we fight from Victory!

Then, in Ephesians 6:10-18, we learn about putting on the full armor of God. Thankfully, there’s no need to fight battles fully exposed!

 God is so powerful that all He has to do is speak, but we also see references to God’s outstretched right arm. I envision God’s power in this way: He is more than able and willing, plus He is quick to help when we call on Him.

God’s power is best seen when He comes to our defense or aid. Come Hell or high water, there’s nothing He can’t do for us! So, we don’t need to try to do everything on our own. Check in frequently with Him and tell Him what you need. (That’s prayer!)

One example of this is Peter walking on water and then falling into the water. He was brave but faltered and cried for help. Jesus was right there immediately to pull Him out! (At least Peter tried when no one else did. It does not require faith to stay in the boat!)

God always moves when we have faith in Him, and in the New Testament, Jesus mentioned that the people’s unbelief hindered him. We may not fully see what God is up to, and it might take a while to understand. But He will never let us down!

In fact, the same power that raised Jesus from the dead lives in us and is at work in us! God is with us and for us. He wants to use us and make us more like Jesus. But, we have to let Him! Let’s be malleable and see what He will do!

Heavenly Father, You are so good. Thanks for always helping us in time of need. May we be in awe of Your power, strength, and speed. Help us trust in You, even when we can’t fully see or understand what You are doing. In Jesus’ Name, Amen

Finding Grace #493

You may have seen the acronym GRACE as God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. Grace is also God’s unmerited favor, or God doing for us what we cannot.

I find grace overflowing with God’s love, joy, peace, blessings, mercy, power, provision, protection, and wisdom. Thank You, Jesus!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This week was relaxing at first and then picked up later. We were on our road trip Sunday, then I was off Monday and Tuesday to celebrate my birthday.

For my birthday, I enjoyed a quiet early morning with coffee, reading, writing, and exercise. Late morning, Lydia and I visited another little flower garden, refilled my peach balsamic vinegar, and bought a half-flat of peaches for a Youth For Christ fundraiser. In the afternoon, we watched Freakier Friday, read at Barnes and Noble, and ate at Crave. Then, we walked around the mall before getting ice cream for the surprise chocolate cake Lydia made me. It was a great day, and I felt a bit like a celebrity with all the birthday greetings and well-wishes! Thank you!

On Wednesday, it was back to work, but it was manageable. Ironically, I did not have to bring lunch any day this week. Besides being out of the office on Monday/Tuesday, on Wednesday, we had a potluck, and on Thursday, we had a birthday treat for me, so I just brought a light snack. I also don’t stay long enough on Friday to need lunch there. 🙂

After work on Friday, I went to the bookstore to do some continuing education while drinking a latte. Then, I went home to mow before taking Lydia to a friend’s house. After that, I worked on another project. It felt good to get so much done, and I also squeezed in some reading before Lydia got back!

Today, I did various chores and made a peach galette. It tastes delicious, but fell apart and wouldn’t look good enough to bring anywhere. Maybe next time, I will leave the fruit on the bottom and make a cobbler with the crust on top!

A North Dakota Roadtrip Adventure

Over the weekend, we had an awesome two-day North Dakota road trip adventure! I wanted to do something special before my birthday (yesterday), and almost our whole trip involved places we hadn’t been before. We stayed in Rugby and went to the border to see the International Peace Gardens (Lydia’s first time through Customs). We enjoyed the fountains, trees, flowers, and saw way more cacti than I knew existed (some gigantic, some tiny). We met some really sweet Canadians at a vendor show and bought some souvenirs.

The weather was partially cloudy, with sprinkles on and off, but we made the best of it. Truthfully, I was a little irked at first. I was hoping the rain would hold off, and of course, I left my umbrella at work. We decided to do the Canadian driving portion first. That helped, but then it started up again in spurts (on and off, for most of the day).

Lydia and I walked when we could and jumped into and out of the car to see some of the sights. We were glad I had thrown a couple of beach towels in last minute, and Lydia kept laughing about it all. Later, I overheard a dad telling his child, “Well, it seems God wanted it to rain today, so we aren’t going to argue with Him.” I took that to heart and just went with it after that. In fact, perhaps because of the rain, we saw so much on Saturday!



Then, we drove to nearby Lake Metigoshe State Park and knocked out a few fun roadside attractions (see below). We even made it to Minot, which was larger than I expected. We enjoyed the Scandinavian Heritage Park. I thought of my mom many times on Saturday, surrounded by beautiful flowers and some Danish cultural items.

On Sunday, we drove home another way, this time going the northern route around Devils Lake. Lydia had been that way before on her way to camp, so it was fun to see her recognize some landmarks. We visited Graham’s Island State Park and then went on to Grand Forks for lunch. We even made it home early in the afternoon, so I could mow!

Lydia hopes to take her driver’s permit test in a few months, so we discussed the rules of the road along the way. We talked about our goals for the upcoming year and other trips we would like to take together. It was great spending time together and making memories!

Traveling can be a lot of work, but we tried to keep this one simple. We took our own snacks and treats to save money, although we also picked up a few items on the way. We cut out another large swath of driving and decided to save that destination for another trip. I had wanted to visit the Peace Gardens since my birthday trip to Medora last year, and I am glad we made it happen.

More importantly, I want Lydia to know what North Dakota is all about, since she was born here. In five-ish years, she will likely go to college, and then we will have limited opportunities together. So, I want to make the most of our time. Sure, we tend to stay home a lot, but when we do travel, we make it worth our while! 🙂

A road trip is also a good way to connect with God. His beauty is found in Nature, and His provision in timing, safe travels, and new adventures to do or see. Taking a step away from our routine helps us appreciate what we have when we get back home. Thank You, Lord!

Worthy of Praise

We sing a song at church called “Praise” by Elevation Worship. It is a fun song to sing, but the message is also important. Here’s one section of the lyrics:

I’ll praise when I feel it
And I’ll praise when I don’t
I’ll praise ’cause I know
You’re still in control
Because my praise is a weapon
It’s more than a sound (more than a sound)
Oh, my praise is the shout
That brings Jericho down
 
 
God is worthy of our praise whether we feel like it or not. Praising Him is not always easy or enjoyable. Sometimes, it is downright difficult. Distraction, pain, suffering, grief – there are so many things to take our eyes off Jesus. Still, praise and worship are tools to show others how great God is.
 
When we give God credit for His work in our lives, we magnify His glory and shine attention back to Jesus. Our pride and self-promotion take a worthy hit in the process. As we redirect our focus, we see things His way and trust Him at a deeper level.  This frees us from our chains and confuses our enemy.
 
It’s difficult to praise God when things are going wrong, but it blesses God and brings blessings upon us, too. Praising God may or may not change our circumstances, but it does change our hearts as the Holy Spirit moves and tweaks our perspective. Talk about transformation!

 
Praise is a timely reminder that people will fail us, but our Creator and Almighty God, never will. He is infinitely faithful and good. He is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in love. Our Heavenly Father will never leave nor forsake His children. 
 
Praise has the power to prepare us for God’s greater work. As the Holy Spirit redirects us, we are open to what He wants us to do. We align our vision with His and gain confidence to move forward with intention.
 
Praising God has the potential to prevent panic when things go awry. We can praise, pray, and plan in advance! Then, whenever a problem does arise, we are prepared.
 
Praise can be a form of prayer, which is really just communicating with God. The acronym ACTS starts with Adoration, then Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. In some ways, you can praise, worship, and pray all at the same time!
 
Don’t worry if you are a good singer. You can shout your praises or whisper them. There is always a reason to praise. Just come and give God the glory for all He has done for you. He just wants your heart!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This week, I was exhausted but God did so many good things through me. I was short on sleep almost all week, but was able to sleep in a bit one day.

Work was…. a lot. But good, too! In addition to my normal load, I had about ten other patients who needed some help.  But, I was also was “off” 8 hours, due to the holiday weekend. My coworker took two patients that I was supposed to cover another coworker, so that was very helpful. I worked today from 8 to Noon, as it was my designated holiday weekend. God helped me and it all turned out just fine.

On Wednesday, I was off in the afternoon (since I had to work the weekend), and that’s when the appliance repairman was able to come! He was only at my house for about twenty-five minutes. He was able to figure out what was wrong – an internal hose was clogged. He only charged me for the house call since he didn’t need to replace anything. What a blessing!

Friday was Independence Day! We had a pretty relaxing day. Lydia packed for camp next week, and I did a little cooking while talking on the phone. We thought we’d hang outside for fireworks with our neighbors. But, it rained for a little bit that evening, so Lydia and I decided to stay inside and watch The Chosen, Season 5, instead. It’s on Amazon Prime and so good! Watching it for a second time is helpful to catch things I missed before.

Today, on my way to work, I prayed and thanked God for the opportunity to serve Veterans. I appreciate not having to work the other holidays this year, and I’m glad I could do this one for my coworkers. As it turned out, I only had one patient to see and chart. Then, I was able to finish up some other charting, so I don’t have to do it next week! Whew!

I was able to leave work on time today, so I got a few things done around the house. Lydia and I mowed this evening, and now we are hanging out!

Family Ties

Lydia and I had a great time at our family reunion last weekend! We traveled directly to Nashville on the way there, and through Dallas – Fort Worth on the way back (two new airports for us!). Nashville was hot and busy, but we had a lot of fun.

I don’t know of many large families that can all get together and get along. I’m sure they exist, lol, but I am grateful for my family’s love and craziness! We had about forty people attend, including some friends who are like family. We missed those who could not make it!

We arrived late on Thursday night and met some others for Friday breakfast at The Loveless Cafe. Then, about half of us went downtown to walk down Broadway. It was busy and loud (people and music in every direction), but it was good to say we did it. Lydia and I share some delicious nachos! I loved the pedestrian bridge!

Apparently, there’s been a lot of growth over the last decade. My friends who have been down there for many years barely recognize the city. Unfortunately, Downtown Nashville has become quite touristy. It’s not all music and bars; there are some cool museums, historical sites, and many shops and restaurants.

On Saturday, Lydia and I slept in a little before we spent most of our day at the Nashville Zoo. The heat could have been too much, but thankfully, there are many trees to provide shade. We enjoyed the zipline and chasing the kids around. We had two four-year-olds, a five-year-old, and Lydia (13). They kept on the move, and it was fun to see them excited over every animal, big or small. In the evening, we got dinner and then played ‘reindeer games’ while catching up with everyone.

Sunday’s breakfast was at Elliston Place Soda Shop. I split some pancakes and eggs with Lydia and then got some pie to go! The meringue on my pie was practically a mile high! Lydia and I went shopping, and then lunch was at a steakhouse. There, we also had a family game and awards.

A little while later, we had a memorial for family members who have passed away. We released butterflies in their honor—Mom would have loved that!

Soon after, two of my local friends stopped by, and we talked for about two hours. Various family members also chatted with them, and it was so good to see them.

On Monday, most everyone headed back home. Before heading to the airport, we went to a huge used bookstore, McKay’s. After two flights, Lydia and I arrived home.

I am grateful for the time we spent together with loved ones. It is good to stay connected to our roots. I’m grateful for God’s rest and the ability to travel and try some new things!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This week was a great week! We had a perfect mix of hard work and relaxation, rain and sunshine, cooler weather and heat.

On Tuesday, Lydia had volleyball camp and is feeling more comfortable.

I worked two days and then had the rest of the week off! I kept busy at the office but mostly helped my coworkers after I was done with my own patients.

On Wednesday, I was off to prepare for a trip. On Thursday, Juneteenth, I was off anyway, so we flew to Nashville for a family reunion (just a central spot we hadn’t been to yet).

Several people came to the reunion. This includes my dad’s family from all over the US, plus Greece and England. We also invited some sweet Florida friends who have been so kind to our family. The more the merrier! We went downtown, to the Zoo, ate lots of yummy food, played games, and so much more.

Before we left, my washing machine stopped working. I am hoping it is an easy fix, but I could not figure it out. My family offered ideas over the phone, but I ended up asking my neighbor to check it out. However, it will have to wait until next week due to the timing. Thankfully, I have plenty of clothes and towels, so it is not an emergency!

Yesterday, several parts of North Dakota had tornadoes. I don’t know all the details but there were some damages and a few deaths. So sad. I am grateful for my neighbors watching my house and glad we were safe (far away).

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This week was quite busy because we had something going on almost every night, but it all went well for the most part. I loved seeing so many pretty flowers around town and in the healing gardens at work. The peonies are especially gorgeous!

Monday night was the chiropractor. I am always glad to go because I can tell such a big difference. This time my back felt very “out of whack,” so I had some residual pain for a day or so after. But, overall, I feel so much better now! Thanks, Lord!

Tuesdays are usually my blogging night, but Lydia also had her volleyball camp. She was nervous but it turned out well. She said it was very competitive but I hope she can still have fun.

Work was pretty normal in that I had some pretty full days. I had some complex patients, and I received some compliments. Mostly, I just leaned on God to help me do my best. He is faithful, and I am grateful.

On Wednesday night, the summer youth group kicked off! Lydia had fun, and I am glad she went because she missed several times during the school year. This was for several reasons, including traveling, being sick, and doing homework. Still, it is a good program to build into our kids, so I always encourage Lydia to go!

By Thursday night, I was exhausted mentally and physically. I had a very taxing day at work and needed a break. So, I came home and lounged on the couch for a while. I thought about mowing the lawn, but instead, I ate some dinner, stretched a bit, and went to bed.

Last night, I did mow the lawn, and it was a beautiful day to do so. I also weeded and spent an extra hour outside doing various tasks. It was great. Lydia did not feel good, so I just let her rest. But one of these days, I will have her mow, too!

Today was a pretty relaxing day. We were invited to a graduation party, which was fun. I ran into an old friend I hadn’t seen in years, so I loved catching up with her.

Introverts and Ice Cream

A few days ago, I watched a social media post for introverts about how to meet people. It was so funny, and I laughed when Kelsey Pomeroy said, “Stop trying to make the friends, and let the friends make you. Set yourself up to be claimed, adopted, and befriended by an extrovert…”

Her idea was that introverts can “advertise” their interests to find people with whom they can connect. For instance, you may carry a book on a topic you like; people who enjoy that book might want to talk about it. You could wear a shirt representing your favorite sports team or put stickers on your water bottle to find like-minded people.

We all give off signals, but we may not be aware of what messages we are sending. Putting headphones in says you don’t want to talk, while making eye contact and smiling implies you are open and available.

I am an introvert — I am not shy or socially awkward. I love getting to know people on a deeper level, but sadly, it can be difficult since people don’t take the time to have deeper conversations. I am quiet and appreciate calm places without excess noise or commotion (like really loud music, flashy lights, or crazy traffic). I am happy to be out of the spotlight, but the flip side is that I must guard against feeling unimportant, overlooked, or forgotten. 

Don’t feel sorry for me, I am okay with it! In fact, I have a deal with God. He directs my steps, and I go where He leads. If He has something for me to do, I don’t want to miss it. But, if He doesn’t tell me to get involved, I can do what I want… I can go home, lol!

I love solitude and can easily stay by myself for a couple of days. (I am totally fine when Lydia is at camp or out with others!) The key difference is that I also like being around people. Sometimes, I will go to the mall or bookstore to make sure I don’t isolate myself too much.

Because I am content to chill on my own without much fanfare, sometimes I have to push myself to join a group event. If I am excited for an activity, then nothing will stop me. But, if I am on the fence, a personal invitation is the golden ticket! I feel included and already have a friend! In some cases, I give myself an out: If no one invites me and I don’t really want to go, then I am off the hook!

Still, there are plenty of times I need to go somewhere and don’t know anyone. In those situations, I make up my mind to get through it and find someone who may need some help or encouragement. I specifically make eye contact and smile to make sure I am approachable. I go with a servant heart and try to be the friend I’d like to have.

I also find if I am included in the planning of an event, then I feel more comfortable. This is probably because I know what to expect, but I also try to make others navigate the situation.

At work, I have no problems, as our culture is to greet each other in the halls. I meet new patients all throughout the week. We already have a set topic to discuss, but I invite them into my office and jump right in!

As you may guess, Lydia is a lot like me. As such, I can guide her on how to avoid some classic pitfalls. Last night, I dropped her off at a 1.5-hour volleyball camp, and she was so nervous! I prayed for her but knew exactly how she felt. Thankfully, she came home saying she was glad she went. We talked about being introverts while enjoying some ice cream. I’m so glad I could share more about how God made us. There are challenges, but pushing through the awkwardness is still important!
